The trial was a spectacle that defined the decade. It wasn't just a criminal trial for Preston; it was a public unraveling of the Thorne family legacy. Evelyn testified for three days. She didn't hold back. She told the jury about the times Preston had broken her toys to ‘teach her a lesson,’ the times her mother had ignored her injuries, and the cold, calculated environment that had turned a man into a monster.
When she stepped off the stand, the entire courtroom was silent. She looked at her parents, sitting in the front row. They looked small. Without the suit-and-tie polish, without the lawyers shielding them, they looked like two old, hollow people who had spent their lives building a monument to their own vanity.
Preston sat at the defense table, his head buried in his hands. He was no longer the golden child. He was just a man who had hit a child, a man who had lied, and a man who was facing a decade in prison.
"Does the witness have any final words?" the judge asked, looking at Evelyn.
Evelyn looked at Preston. She didn't feel hate anymore. She felt an overwhelming, heavy pity.
"I don't have words for him," she said, nodding toward her brother. "He’s a product of the house I grew up in. But I want the court to know that I am not a victim anymore. I am the one who survived."
When the jury returned, the verdict was guilty on all counts. Preston was led away in handcuffs, his eyes meeting Evelyn’s for a fleeting second—a look of pure, unadulterated shock. He had expected to be saved. He had expected to walk out of the courtroom and be forgiven.
