Chapter 8 - The Weight of Silence
Evelyn and Sophie settled into their life in Oregon, but the past had a way of whispering. Sometimes, Sophie would wake up crying, clutching her head, and Evelyn would have to hold her until the sun came up, reminding her that they were safe, that the wolves were gone, and that they would never be cornered again.
But then, a letter arrived in the mail. It was postmarked from the prison where Preston was being held.
Evelyn hesitated. She held the envelope for an hour, looking at the return address. She didn't want to open it. She didn't want to hear his voice.
Finally, she threw it into the fireplace and watched it turn to ash.
"Mommy?" Sophie asked, coming into the room. "Is that a bad letter?"

"No, baby," Evelyn said, pulling her into her lap. "It’s just a ghost. And we don't read letters from ghosts anymore."
She realized then that the final victory wasn't destroying her family—it was simply forgetting them.
