Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Six months later, the coast of Oregon was quiet, cool, and beautifully wild. Evelyn sat on the porch of a small, cedar-shingled cottage, watching the waves roll in. Sophie was playing in the sand, her hair grown back over the scar on her head, her laughter carried by the wind.
She wasn't the lamb anymore. She had taken her daughter and built a life that didn't require permission.
Julian called her every week, updating her on the final settlement. The Thorne estate had been fully liquidated, and the charity funds were finally being directed to where they were supposed to go—helping children who had nowhere else to turn.
Evelyn took a sip of her coffee, feeling the warm, salt-thickened air on her skin. She had done it. She had severed the limb to save the life.
She heard a car pull into the driveway. It wasn't the police. It wasn't a process server. It was her aunt, Clara, driving a beat-up station wagon.
"Ready for a trip?" Clara called out, stepping out of the car.
"Where are we going?" Evelyn asked, standing up.
"To the archives," Clara smiled. "The Thorne family had a secret vault. I think it’s time we showed the world what they were really hiding in their private records."

Evelyn looked at Sophie, who was now running toward her, a seashell clutched in her hand. She looked at the horizon—a line of endless possibility.
"Let's go," Evelyn said.
