Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

One year later.

The morning sun washed over the coastline of Lake Michigan. I sat on the porch of a beautiful, light-filled beach home in Evanston—a home bought with my own independent inheritance, completely free from the toxic legacy of the Vance name.

The past year had been a journey of deep healing. With the financial fraud exposed, my father was forced into early retirement in disgrace, and my mother was dropped by every charity board in the city. They lived isolated lives in a small suburban townhouse, forgotten by the society they had sacrificed their souls to impress.

Preston was serving his time in a maximum-security facility, learning the hard truth that money and status couldn't protect him behind bars.

I heard small footsteps running across the wooden deck.

"Mommy! Look what I drew!"

Sophie ran toward me, her face bright with laughter, her cheeks rosy with health. Her long dark hair bounced as she ran, partially covering the tiny, faint scar near her hairline—a scar that no longer represented pain, but our victory and freedom.

She handed me a vibrant watercolor painting of a sun rising over a blue ocean, with two figures holding hands on the shore.

"It's us," Sophie declared proudly, sitting on my lap and hugging me tight. "In our real home."

I kissed the top of her head, holding her close, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat. The nightmare was over. The truth had set us free, and for the first time in my life, my daughter and I were safe, happy, and completely whole.

I looked out at the bright horizon, took a deep breath of the clear morning air, and smiled.

We had survived the wolves.
