Chapter 8 - The Trial of Chicago’s Golden Boy

Six months later, the trial began at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse. It became known in the press as the "Wedding Day Assault Trial."

The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal experts, and curious spectators. My parents sat behind the defense bench, isolated and shunned by their former high-society friends. They had spent millions on high-profile defense attorneys, but nothing could undo the mountain of evidence against their son.

The turning point came when the prosecution played the full, unedited 4K CCTV video on the court's large displays.

The jury watched in horror as Preston calmly placed the phone in Sophie's pocket, staged the public accusation, and then delivered the brutal blow with the oak board. Gasps filled the courtroom. My mother covered her face, finally forced to look at the reality of the monster she had enabled for three decades.

Next, I took the stand.

I spoke clearly and confidently, detailing years of golden-child favorability, the emotional abuse, and finally, the horrific night at the hotel. I showed the jury the scars still visible near Sophie’s hairline.

When the defense attorney tried to cross-examine me, suggesting I was acting out of bitter jealousy over the family estate, Marcus brought out the financial audit records. We proved that Preston had stolen over $12 million from the family trust and had deliberately orchestrated the assault to secure the rest.

Preston sat at the defense table, his head bowed, no longer the smug prince of the Vance family, but a convicted felon facing the full weight of the law.
