Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Mastermind

I locked myself in my apartment, inserted the USB drive into my laptop, and opened the video file.

The footage was crystal clear, shot in 4K resolution.

I watched the screen with tears streaming down my face. At 8:42 PM, while everyone was distracted by the toast, the video showed Preston standing near our table. He looked around, pulled his custom titanium iPhone from his pocket, and deftly slipped it into the pocket of Sophie’s hanging denim jacket.

He then walked back to the front, waited five minutes, and launched into his dramatic speech about the missing phone.

The video captured every single detail: Preston pulling the phone from Sophie's jacket, the smug expression on his face, my confrontation, and then—the horrifying moment where he grabbed the heavy oak menu board with both hands, swung it in a wide arc, and struck my eight-year-old daughter across the head.

The footage didn't lie. It was cold, brutal, and indisputable proof of calculated framing and aggravated assault on a minor.

But as I paused the video, a question burned in my mind: Why? Why would Preston go through such elaborate lengths to frame an eight-year-old girl at his own high-society wedding?

I spent the rest of the night digging through old family documents, emails, and financial records that my late grandfather had left me in a locked safe years ago. Grandfather Vance had always been the only person who loved me unconditionally.

At 3:00 AM, I found the answer.

My grandfather’s will contained a special execution clause regarding his $40 million real estate trust. The clause stipulated that the entire estate would pass to Preston upon his marriage—unless Preston committed a violent crime or brought public moral turpitude upon the family name, in which case the trust would immediately transfer in full to me and Sophie.

Preston knew I was getting close to discovering the terms of the trust. He had deliberately framed Sophie to discredit me as an unstable thief and unfit mother, planning to use the scandal to strip me of any legal standing to contest his inheritance.

He hadn't just acted out of anger. It was a calculated, cold-blooded financial execution.
