Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Armed with the CCTV video and the financial evidence, Marcus and I met directly with the State Attorney and federal prosecutors.
With undeniable public pressure and ironclad physical and financial evidence, the state could no longer hide behind my father's political clout.
At 2:00 PM on Thursday, three squad cars and two federal vehicles pulled up to the Vance family estate.
I stood across the street with Marcus, watching the scene unfold.
Preston was led out in handcuffs, dressed in an expensive suit, his face pale with shock. Behind him, my mother was screaming at the officers, threatening to have them all fired, while my father stood on the porch, looking suddenly old, broken, and helpless as federal agents carrying boxes of seized documents walked out of his front door.
As the officers guided Preston toward the back of the police cruiser, he caught sight of me standing on the sidewalk.
"Evelyn!" he screamed, his voice cracking with rage and fear. "Tell them it was an accident! Tell them you made it up! You're ruining this family! You're destroying my life!"
I walked slowly toward the police car, looking down at the brother who had spent thirty years terrorizing me and finally tried to crush my child.

"I didn't destroy your life, Preston," I said calmly, my voice steady and clear. "You did that the moment you raised that board against Sophie. The family you built on lies is finally over."
The officer closed the door, cutting off his desperate screams, and drove away.
