Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

The Grand Marquis Hotel in downtown Charlotte was a palace of marble columns, crystal chandeliers, and vaulted glass ceilings.

By seven o'clock on Saturday evening, the valet driveway was jammed with luxury sedans and sports cars. Marcelo’s cousin, Julian, was marrying into one of the state's wealthiest real estate dynasties, and the guest list was a whow's-who of local high society.

A sleek black Maybach sedan pulled up to the red carpeted entrance.

Inside the rear cabin, Eduardo adjusted his black-tie tuxedo cuffs, while I sat beside him, taking deep, measured breaths. My emerald dress shimmered beneath the streetlights outside. My hair was styled into an elegant updo, secured with a antique diamond clip Eduardo’s firm had arranged.

In my clutch purse sat two items: a gold compact mirror, and a certified copy of the court injunction freezing Marcelo’s stolen assets.

"Remember the rule," Eduardo said softly, taking my hand. His skin was warm, grounding me against the rising tide of adrenaline. "You do not react to his provocations. You do not argue. You are the calmest, most powerful person in that room."

"Where are Marcus and the legal team?" I asked.

"Positioned near the main stage," Eduardo replied with a calm smile. "The process server is waiting in the lobby. When I give the signal, he steps in."

The driver opened the Maybach’s door.

Eduardo stepped out first, offering me his hand. As my silver-heeled shoe hit the red carpet, I straightened my posture, lifted my chin, and stepped into the flashing lights of the hotel lobby.

The grand ballroom was breathtaking. Hundreds of guests in formal attire mingled around ice sculptures and towering floral arrangements, sipping champagne while a string quartet played softly in the corner.

We hadn't been in the room for thirty seconds before I spotted him.

Marcelo stood near the central bar, holding a crystal glass of scotch. He was dressed in a high-end tuxedo, surrounded by three of his old college friends and his mother, Brenda—a woman who had spent four years treating me like an unfortunate charity case her son had mistakenly brought home.

Marcelo was laughing loudly, holding court, gesturing animatedly as he spoke.

"...so I told the broker," Marcelo’s loud, pompous voice carried over the quiet hum of the room, "if you want the Oakridge property, you pay my price. I bought it out from under my ex-wife for pennies. Poor girl couldn't manage a household budget to save her life—"

"Is that the official story now, Marcelo?"

My voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It possessed a razor-sharp clarity that cut through his sentence like a glass blade.

Marcelo froze mid-laugh. He turned slowly, an arrogant, patronizing smirk already forming on his lips—a smirk designed to dismiss whatever sad outfit he expected me to be wearing.

When his eyes fell upon me, his expression shattered.

His smirk didn't just fade; it vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock. His eyes flew from my diamond-adorned hair down the sweeping lines of my emerald silk gown, taking in the flawless makeup, the regal posture, and finally resting on Eduardo, who stood beside me like an immovable wall of quiet authority.

The scotch glass in Marcelo’s hand tilted, amber liquid spilling over his knuckles onto his pristine white cuff.

"Camila...?" Marcelo choked out, his voice dropping an octave into pure bewilderment. "What... what are you doing here?"
