Chapter 8 - The Foundation

A sleek silver sedan pulled into the driveway behind the moving truck.

Eduardo stepped out, wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans—looking entirely different from the high-powered executive who had walked into my life months ago, yet possessing the same quiet, unwavering presence.

He walked over, holding two large boxes of pizza and a set of wooden building blocks for the boys.

"Grand opening of the Oakridge kingdom?" Eduardo smiled, dropping to one knee to hand the blocks to Miguel and Mateo.

"Look, Eduardo!" Miguel cheered, ripping open the box. "We can build a giant castle on the porch!"

"Only if I get to help design the drawbridge," Eduardo chuckled, ruffling Miguel’s dark hair with genuine affection.

Watching Eduardo interact with my sons made my heart swell with an emotion so deep and profound it nearly took my breath away. In three short months, he hadn't just rescued us financially; he had become a steady, patient father figure to two little boys who had spent their lives feeling invisible to their biological father.

After the boys ran onto the porch to start building their wooden castle, Eduardo stood up, stepping close to me.

"How does it feel to be back?" he asked softly, taking my hand and intertwining his fingers with mine.

"It feels like a dream," I admitted, looking up at the front door. "For so long, I thought this house was a symbol of my failure. I thought I failed as a wife, as a mother, as a person. But standing here now... I realize this house wasn't the failure. The marriage was."

"And the future?" Eduardo asked, his dark eyes searching mine with a gentle, hopeful intensity.

"The future is finally ours," I smiled.

Eduardo pulled a small velvet box from his jacket pocket.

My breath hitched. "Eduardo...?"

"Don't worry," Eduardo chuckled softly, opening the box to reveal a set of brass keys attached to a silver keychain engraved with the coordinates of Oakridge Drive. "I'm not rushing you into anything, Camila. But I bought the empty land parcel adjacent to this lot last week."

I stared at him in shock. "You bought the neighboring lot?"

May you like

"I'm building my firm's regional office there," Eduardo explained, his smile warm and brilliant. "Which means I’ll be spending a lot of time in the neighborhood... if that’s okay with the landlord."

I laughed—a bright, clear sound of pure joy—and threw my arms around his neck, kissing him deeply under the warm afternoon sun.
