Chapter 5 - The Gift of Truth

I pulled the folded legal document from my purse and extended it toward Marcelo.

He didn't reach for it. He stared at the white paper as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.

"What is that?" Marcelo hissed under his breath.

"It’s a court-ordered lis pendens freeze on all assets associated with Apex Horizons LLC," I explained, my voice carrying clearly to the surrounding guests, including Arthur Vance. "Including the Oakridge property, your secondary investment accounts in Grand Cayman, and the commercial building you bought on Trade Street three months ago."

"You can't do that!" Marcelo shouted, dropping all pretense of aristocratic calm. His face turned a dangerous, blotchy red. "The divorce was finalized three months ago! You signed the papers!"

"A divorce decree obtained through material fraud and asset concealment is legally voidable, Mr. Holloway," Eduardo stated firmly, turning to address the crowd and Arthur Vance directly. "As of four o'clock this afternoon, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department has placed a lien on all real estate transactions involving Mr. Holloway. Any buyer who attempts to purchase Oakridge Drive from him will be engaging in the acquisition of stolen property under federal law."

Arthur Vance’s face went pale. He looked at Marcelo with absolute fury. "You lied to me, Marcelo! You tried to sell me an encumbered property subject to a federal fraud investigation?!"

"Arthur, wait! Let me explain!" Marcelo begged, reaching for the developer's arm.

Vance slapped Marcelo’s hand away with disgust. "The deal is off! My legal team will be contacting you on Monday morning to recover my earnest deposit!" Vance turned on his heel and stormed out of the ballroom.

Brenda gasped, grabbing her son’s shoulder. "Marcelo! What is happening?!"

"What's happening, Brenda," I said, stepping directly in front of my ex-husband, "is that the truth finally caught up with your son."

Marcelo glared at me, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. All the arrogant charm he had worn for years was gone, stripped away to reveal the pathetic, terrified coward underneath.

"You think you're smart, don't you?" Marcelo whispered savagely, leaning in so only Eduardo and I could hear. "You think some fancy dress and a corporate lawyer make you a big person? You're still nothing, Camila! You live in a tiny two-room apartment! You can't even afford to take the boys to a decent restaurant!"

The moment he brought up Miguel and Mateo, the last lingering trace of hesitation inside me vanished.

"My boys have something you will never possess, Marcelo," I said, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute power. "They have a mother who would sacrifice everything for them. And starting tonight, they are getting their home back."

I tapped the legal document against his chest, letting it fall onto the marble floor at his feet.

"See you in court, Marcelo."
