Chapter 3: The Boardroom Execution

The emergency board meeting was called for 9:00 AM the following morning. The atmosphere inside the 40th-floor conference room was suffocating. Twelve of the most powerful corporate directors in the Midwest sat in high-backed leather chairs, their faces grim as they reviewed the newly updated shareholder registry.

Reid sat at the head of the table, his tie slightly loosened, his eyes bloodshot from a completely sleepless night. He had spent the last fourteen hours screaming at his legal team, only to receive the same devastating answer from every attorney: Claire's legal maneuver was flawless. By undervaluing her father's tech patents during the divorce to avoid paying her a settlement, Reid had inadvertently allowed her to retain full ownership of the company's operating spine.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Claire walked in. She was accompanied by her chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, a legendary corporate shark.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Claire said, taking her seat directly opposite Reid. She placed a small, insulated baby monitor on the table beside her tablet. The faint, rhythmic sound of the twins breathing filled the silent room.

"Claire, let’s be reasonable," one of the senior board members, a long-time ally of Reid's father, began nervously. "Ashford Meridian is Reid's life's work. A sudden shift in leadership right before a highly publicized marriage could cause our stock to plummet."

"The stock is already fluctuating because of Reid's poor lifestyle choices and high-profile distractions," Claire replied coldly, staring directly into Reid’s eyes. "Over the last six months, under Reid's direction, this company spent forty million dollars on marketing campaigns built around Ms. Blake's modeling agency—a clear conflict of interest that yielded a negative return on investment. Furthermore, our logistics efficiency has dropped by twelve percent because the executive team failed to maintain compliance protocols."

Reid clenching his fists under the table. "I was expanding our demographic, Claire. It was a strategic branding move."

"It was an expensive vanity project to please your mistress," Claire fired back, her voice raising just enough to command absolute authority. "I am not here to dismantle this company, gentlemen. I helped build it. But I am here to protect the future of my sons' inheritance. Therefore, I am introducing a vote of no confidence against Reid Ashford as sole Managing Director."

"Claire, please," Reid rasped, his pride shattering in front of his peers. "Don't do this. Let's talk in private. We can restructure the trust for the boys."

"The time for talking was nine months ago, Reid," Claire said, pressing a button on her console. "Let’s vote."

Ten minutes later, the results were clear. Out of twelve board members, nine voted in favor of Claire’s resolution. Reid was stripped of his absolute executive power, reduced to a minority partner with no voting control over his own family legacy.

As the board members filed out of the room, leaving them alone, Reid looked across the table at his ex-wife, a mixture of profound regret and awe washing over him. "You really became a monster, didn't you?"

"No, Reid," Claire said softly, picking up her baby monitor as she stood up. "I just finally found the shield you thought I never had. Good luck with your wedding."
