Chapter 5: The Long Road to Redemption

Six months passed.

The corporate restructuring of Ashford Meridian under Claire’s leadership was nothing short of miraculous. She eliminated the wasteful marketing campaigns, stabilized the shipping matrix, and restored the company's stock to an all-time high. She moved into a beautiful, sunlit estate in the suburbs of Minneapolis, prioritizing a quiet, healthy environment for Ethan and Caleb.

Reid, meanwhile, had completely withdrawn from the high-society spotlight. He spent his days in a small, secondary office on the lower floors of the tower, quietly working on supply-chain analytics—the very work Claire used to do. He attended mandatory therapy, stopped drinking, and cut ties with his superficial social circle. The arrogant billionaire had been completely dismantled, replaced by a man deeply haunted by his own past actions.

One crisp autumn afternoon, Claire was sitting on a bench in the sculpture garden near the city museum, watching the twins sleep in their stroller. The autumn leaves were falling softly, painting the grass in shades of gold and amber.

"May I sit down?" a quiet, hesitant voice asked.

Claire looked up to see Reid. He looked entirely different. The costly, ostentatious charcoal suits were gone, replaced by a simple dark wool coat and a plain sweater. His face was leaner, his eyes holding a profound humility she had never seen in him during their six years of marriage.

Claire hesitated, then nodded slightly, shifting her bag to give him space. "You're supposed to be in Chicago for the regional audit, Reid."

"I handed that assignment over to Marcus," Reid said softly, his eyes immediately drifting to the twins. He reached out a hand, his fingers trembling slightly as he gently tucked Caleb’s blanket around his tiny shoulders. "I wanted to see them. I wanted to see you."

"They are doing well," Claire said, her voice softer than it had been in the boardroom. "They started rolling over last week."

"Claire... I don't expect you to forgive me," Reid whispered, a sudden, heavy tear slipping down his cheek. He didn't try to hide it. "I was an arrogant, blind fool. I let the wealth, the media, and my own ego turn me into a monster. I threw away the only woman who ever loved me for a lie. Seeing you run the company, seeing you protect our boys... it made me realize how small I really am."

He turned to look at her, his eyes full of a raw, agonizing truth. "I don't care about the shares anymore, Claire. I don't care about the CEO title. I just want a chance to be a father to them. And if it takes the rest of my life, I want a chance to earn back a sliver of your respect."

Claire looked into his eyes, searching for the old arrogance, but all she found was a broken man trying to rebuild his soul. She looked down at the twins, then back at him.

"A sliver of respect takes time to build, Reid," Claire said quietly, a tiny, faint smile breaking through her professional mask. "But... Ethan needs to learn how to hold his bottle, and he’s incredibly stubborn. If you want to help this weekend, you can come over."

Reid’s breath hitched, a massive wave of relief washing over him. "Thank you, Claire. Thank you."
