Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

The silence in the grand lobby was suffocating.

Ava looked between me and Caleb, her young mind trying to process the word her father had just uttered. "Daughter? Dad... what do you mean?"

Micah dropped his plastic spaceship onto the floor. It clattered loudly against the marble tile, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

"Caleb, what are you talking about?" I demanded, my hands shaking so violently I had to jam them into my coat pockets. "Who is that child?!"

Chloe Sterling stepped forward defensively, placing both hands on the little girl’s thin shoulders. "Don't scream at him! You have no idea what he’s been trying to do!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" I snapped, turning my fury onto her like a spotlight. "You don't get to speak to me! You are standing in a luxury resort with my husband while my children thought he was working an audit! You do not tell me how to react!"

Chloe flinched, stepping back slightly, but her grip on the little girl named Maya didn't loosen.

Caleb stepped directly between us, holding his hands up. "Nora, please. Look at the kids. They’re terrified. Please, let’s go up to the suite. Just ten minutes. I will explain everything. I swear to God on my life, I will answer every question. But we cannot have this conversation in front of hotel staff and strangers."

I looked down at Ava and Micah. Ava’s lips were trembling; she was on the verge of tears. Micah was clinging to my coat hem, staring at the strange little girl in the pink coat.

"Ten minutes, Caleb," I hissed, my voice razor-thin. "If I don't get the complete truth in ten minutes, I am taking your black card, taking my children, and calling a divorce lawyer before we hit the highway."

Five minutes later, we were all inside Suite 402.

The suite was absurdly opulent—a vaulted living area, a stone fireplace, a kitchen stocked with high-end wine, and a balcony overlooking the pine valley. But nobody was enjoying the luxury.

Chloe took Maya into the adjoining bedroom, shutting the door softly to give us privacy. I sat on the leather sofa, holding Ava and Micah on either side of me like a shield. Caleb stood by the unlit fireplace, pacing like a caged animal, his hand constantly pulling at his hair.

"Talk," I commanded.

Caleb took a deep breath, staring at the floor. "Seven years ago... before Micah was born... you and I had that rough patch. Remember? When I took that three-month consulting assignment in Seattle?"

My stomach dropped into a cold abyss. Seven years ago. We had been struggling. We had drifted apart under the weight of financial stress and Ava’s early medical bills. Caleb had taken a high-paying travel contract to clear our debt.

"I remember," I said, my voice hollow.

"I made the biggest mistake of my life," Caleb whispered, refusing to look me in the eye. "I was lonely, stressed, and stupid. I met a woman named Elena Vance."

"Elena Vance?" I repeated. "As in... Vance Pharmaceutical Group?"

"Yes," Caleb said grimly. "Her father is Julian Vance. One of the most powerful, dangerous corporate lawyers on the West Coast. It was a brief affair. It lasted three weeks. When I realized how out of control it was getting, I broke it off, came home to Denver, and pledged my life to you and Ava. I swore I would never look back."

"And?" I pressed, my temper rising again. "She got pregnant?"

"She didn't tell me," Caleb choked out. "She hid the pregnancy. Her father found out, was humiliated by the scandal, and forced her into a private estate in Oregon. Maya was born six years ago. Elena raised her in secret with her family's money, but Julian Vance kept Maya completely cut off from the world. He viewed her as a stain on the Vance family legacy."

"So how did Chloe get involved?" I asked, gesturing toward the closed bedroom door.

"Chloe isn't my mistress, Nora!" Caleb shouted softly, tears streaming down his face. "Chloe is Elena’s younger half-sister! Elena died three weeks ago! Stage four pancreatic cancer!"

The air left my lungs.

"Elena died?" I gasped.

"Yes," Caleb said, falling to his knees on the rug before me, reaching out to touch my hands, though I pulled them back. "Before she died, she made Chloe promise to save Maya. Julian Vance was planning to send Maya to an unregistered boarding school in Switzerland—a place meant to hide unwanted children away forever so they wouldn't inherit any of the Vance family trust. Chloe contacted me three weeks ago. She told me I had a six-year-old daughter, and that if I didn't help get her out of Oregon, I would never see her again."

I sat frozen, trying to process the sheer weight of what he was saying. The receipts. The long hours. The hushed phone calls in the garage. The sudden usage of his private grandfather’s emergency fund.

"You lied to me for three weeks," I said, the words heavy and cold. "You pretended to be at work. You spent thousands of dollars. You brought Chloe and this child here, and you didn't say a single word to your wife."

"Because Julian Vance’s security team has been tracking my private emails!" Caleb pleaded, his hands trembling. "Julian knows about you, Nora! He knows about Ava and Micah! His people threatened to drag our family into court, destroy my firm, and ruin us if I tried to claim custody of Maya! I was trying to protect you! I was trying to arrange an emergency guardianship transfer through a private lawyer here in Colorado before Julian’s men realized Maya was out of Oregon!"

Before I could digest his words, the quiet room was shattered by the sharp sound of shattering glass from the adjoining bedroom.

A scream echoed from inside.

"Caleb!" Chloe screamed from the bedroom. "THEY’RE HERE!"
