Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Window

Caleb sprang to his feet instantly. I shoved Ava and Micah behind me on the sofa, my heart slamming into my throat.
"Stay here!" Caleb yelled, rushing into the bedroom.
I didn't stay. Survival instinct took over. I shoved the kids toward the furthest corner of the living room behind the heavy oak dining table. "Stay under there! Don't move!" I ordered them, before sprinting into the bedroom right behind Caleb.
The sight inside the bedroom was horrifying.
The glass patio door leading to the second-floor fire escape was shattered, thick shards glittering across the carpet. Cold mountain air blew into the room, swirling the white sheer curtains.
Two men in dark tactical jackets and heavy boots stood inside the room. One of them had Chloe pinned against the wall, his heavy hand clamped over her mouth. The second man—a broad-shouldered man with a scar running through his left eyebrow—was holding Maya under his arm.
The little girl was screaming hysterically, kicking her small feet against his chest, her pink coat torn at the collar.
"Get your hands off my daughter!" Caleb roared, charging at the man holding Maya.
Caleb threw a desperate, wild punch. The scarred man dodged easily, swinging his heavy elbow around and catching Caleb squarely across the jaw.
CRACK!
Caleb hit the floor hard, his head snapping back against the bedside table. Blood immediately began pooling from his temple, and his eyes rolled back as he groaned in pain.
"Caleb!" I shrieked.
The scarred man looked at me, his eyes cold and utterly lifeless. "Stay back, lady. This isn't your business. This child belongs to the Vance estate."
"She’s a six-year-old girl!" I screamed, grabbing a heavy brass desk lamp from the nightstand and tearing the cord from the wall.
"Don't do something stupid," the man threatened, adjusting his grip on the sobbing child. "Mr. Vance wants his granddaughter returned to Oregon tonight. Anyone who interferes gets buried in these mountains."
My eyes met little Maya’s face.
She was looking at me through her tears, clutching her battered plush rabbit, her tiny chest heaving with terror. She had Caleb’s eyes. The exact same shade of warm hazel as Ava’s. In that split second, the betrayal, the lies, and the secret past didn't matter. She wasn't just a threat to my marriage or a reminder of Caleb’s past mistake.
She was a frightened child. And she was my kids' sister.
"Put her down," I said, my voice dropping into a register I didn't know I possessed—a dangerous, lethal tone born of pure maternal rage.
"Get out of the way," the man grunted, stepping toward the shattered patio door.
I didn't get out of the way. I swung the heavy brass lamp with every ounce of strength in my body, striking the man holding Chloe right across the side of his knee.
CLANG!
The man howled in pain, dropping Chloe to the carpet as his knee collapsed.
The scarred man holding Maya swore violently, shifting his weight to draw a taser from his tactical belt. That distraction was all Chloe needed. From the floor, she grabbed a heavy glass water carafe from the table and smashed it directly against the back of the scarred man’s head!
Glass exploded. The scarred man stumbled forward, loosening his grip.
"Run, Maya!" Chloe screamed.
The little girl slipped from his arm, hitting the carpet and scrambling toward me. I grabbed Maya by her coat, pulled her behind me, and backed rapidly into the living room, slamming the heavy wooden bedroom door shut and sliding the iron security latch into place.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The men threw their weight against the locked door from the inside, the wood groaning under the impact.
"Mom!" Ava sobbed from under the dining table. "MOM!"
"Caleb!" I screamed through the door. "Caleb, get up!"
Inside the living room, the situation was spinning out of control. Caleb was unconscious in the bedroom with two armed security operatives hired by a ruthless billionaire, and I was trapped in a resort suite with three terrified children and a young woman who was bleeding from her forehead.
My eyes landed on Caleb’s phone sitting on the counter.

I grabbed it, snatched my purse containing the black card, and grabbed Maya’s small hand.
"Out!" I yelled to Ava and Micah. "Out the main front door! NOW!"
