Chapter 8 - The Courthouse Ambush

At 7:45 AM, three news helicopters hovered over the Denver City and County Building.
Word had spread like wildfire through the media networks: Caleb Ellison, executive at Ellison Financial, was holding an emergency public press conference regarding the high-profile disappearance of Vance Pharmaceutical heiress Maya Vance.
Over fifty reporters, cameramen, and news vans crammed the concrete steps of the courthouse.
Our armored SUV pulled up to the curb.
"Remember the plan," Victoria instructed us from the front seat. "Caleb speaks first. Nora, you hold the kids behind the security team. Once we make the statement, we walk straight through those bronze doors and surrender the paternity petition to Judge Sarah Montgomery inside."
Caleb took a deep breath, looking at me. "Nora... whatever happens out there, thank you."
"Save your speeches for the judge, Caleb," I said quietly. "Just don't mess up your lines."
We stepped out of the vehicle.
The bright flash of news cameras exploded like a blinding wall of light. Reporters shouted questions simultaneously, shoving microphones over the security barrier.
"Mr. Ellison! Are you holding Maya Vance against her family's wishes?!" "Is it true you kidnapped the Vance heiress from Oregon?!" "Mrs. Ellison! Did you know about your husband's secret child?!"
Caleb stepped up to the podium set up at the middle of the steps. Microphones were clustered before him. He adjusted his coat, looked directly into the camera lenses, and began to speak.
"My name is Caleb Ellison," his voice boomed across the plaza, clear and unwavering. "Six years ago, a child was born in Oregon. Her name is Maya. For six years, she was hidden from the world by her grandfather, Julian Vance, because her presence threatened his corporate control of Vance Pharmaceutical."
The reporters gasped, the camera shutters clicking twice as fast.
"I am Maya’s biological father," Caleb declared, his voice echoing across the marble columns. "I am here today not to run, not to hide, but to submit myself voluntarily to the state of Colorado for a court-ordered paternity test. Last night, Julian Vance sent armed operatives to attack my family at the Aspen Ridge Resort to forcibly abduct this innocent child."
Suddenly, three black luxury stretch sedans pulled up to the base of the courthouse steps, screeching to a halt.
Julian Vance stepped out, flanked by six top-tier defense attorneys in expensive charcoal suits and four private security officers.
"LIES!" Julian’s voice boomed through a portable megaphone as he marched up the steps, pointing his silver cane at Caleb. "This man is a liar, a fraud, and a corporate extortionist who is exploiting my late daughter's memory to steal from my family estate!"
The media crowd went completely chaotic, cameras spinning to capture the confrontation between the billionaire tycoon and the Denver family.
Julian reached the top landing, his cold eyes fixing on me and the children standing behind the security line. "Officers!" Julian shouted to the uniformed Denver police officers standing near the courthouse entrance. "Enforce the Oregon interstate warrant! Arrest that man and return my granddaughter to my custody immediately!"
The police officers hesitated, looking between the federal warrant papers Julian’s lawyer held out and the overwhelming presence of twenty news cameras recording every second.
"Judge Montgomery has already signed an emergency jurisdiction hold!" Victoria shouted, stepping between the police and Julian. "This matter is currently under Colorado judicial review!"
Julian sneered, stepping right up to me, his voice dropping into a low, venomous whisper that only I could hear. "You think you've won, little housewife? I will spend fifty million dollars to destroy your husband. I will drag your family name through every gutter in this country until you are homeless, bankrupt, and broken."
I looked Julian Vance dead in his cold, arrogant eyes. I didn't step back. I didn't flinch.
I took Maya’s hand, stepped right past him, and looked at the news cameras.

"My name is Nora Ellison," I said, my voice carrying over the crowd with absolute power. "And unlike Julian Vance, I don't care about thirty-percent stock shares or corporate fortunes. I care about protecting children from cold-hearted monsters who treat human beings like bank accounts. If Julian Vance wants to fight for this child, he can do it in a court of law, in front of the whole world!"
The crowd broke into scattered applause and cheers as I led Maya, Ava, and Micah straight through the bronze doors of the courthouse, leaving Julian Vance standing under the harsh glare of fifty flashing cameras.
