Chapter 5 - Fire on the Mountain

I didn't take the stairs back up. I knew the two men from the room would be searching the lower corridors by now. Instead, I ran through the resort's service basement, taking the staff elevator directly back to the fourth floor.
When the elevator doors slid open, the corridor was eerily quiet.
Suite 402’s front door was standing wide open.
I crept down the hallway, gripping the heavy steel crowbar in both hands, my breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. I stepped over the shattered glass near the doorway and peered inside.
Caleb was on his knees near the fireplace, clutching his bloody head, groaning as he tried to pull himself up using a chair. Standing over him was a tall, silver-haired man in a immaculate wool topcoat, holding a silver-headed walking cane.
This was Julian Vance.
He looked to be in his late sixties, with cold blue eyes, a razor-thin mustache, and an aura of absolute, ruthless aristocracy. Two heavily armed guards stood behind him like stone statues.
"You were always weak, Caleb," Julian said, his voice smooth, refined, and devoid of any human warmth. "My daughter Elena ruined her life by dallying with a middle-management coward like you. And now you think you can steal my granddaughter from my estate?"
"She... she isn't your property, Julian," Caleb choked out, blood dripping from his chin onto his white shirt. "She’s my daughter. Elena wanted her with me."
"Elena is dead," Julian replied coldly, tapping his cane against the floor. "And her wishes died with her. Maya carries the Vance bloodline. She will be raised in Switzerland, under my terms, far away from your pathetic, mediocre life. Where is the girl?"
"I'll never tell you," Caleb gasped.
Julian signaled to one of his guards. "Break his arm. He’ll talk."
The guard stepped forward, reaching down to grab Caleb’s shoulder.
"HEY! OLD MAN!" I screamed from the doorway.
Julian Vance slowly turned around, raising an eyebrow in mild surprise as he looked at me—a woman in boots, torn jeans, and a messy ponytail, holding a steel crowbar.
"And who might this be?" Julian asked smoothly. "The cheated wife?"
"I’m the woman who’s about to put that silver cane where the sun doesn't shine if you don't step away from my husband," I said, my crowbar raised high.
Julian chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Delightful. The lower-class wife playing the heroine. Guards, clear her out."
The guard who had knocked Caleb out earlier stepped toward me, drawing a heavy tactical baton from his belt.
Before he could take two steps, the resort's fire alarm system detonated above us with a deafening, ear-splitting shriek!
WAAAH! WAAAH! WAAAH!
Thick, white chemical fire-suppression foam began spraying instantly from the ceiling sprinklers, drenching the entire suite in seconds!
Down in the loading dock, Chloe had hit the main emergency fire alarm switch!
The room descended into utter chaos. The heavy foam blinded the guards, making the hardwood floor impossibly slick. The guard charging at me lost his footing on the wet floor, his legs flying out from under him as he crashed hard onto his back.
I didn't hesitate. I lunged forward, swinging the crowbar down onto the second guard’s arm, knocking his weapon out of his grip!
"Caleb! MOVE!" I screamed, grabbing Caleb by his wet coat collar and dragging him toward the door.
Caleb, fueled by a sudden surge of adrenaline, scrambled to his feet. He grabbed Julian Vance by his wool lapels and shoved the old billionaire backward into the spraying foam, sending him tumbling over a glass coffee table.
"Let's go!" Caleb yelled.
We sprinted out into the hallway, slipping and sliding through the foam, as the entire resort descended into mass evacuation chaos. Guests were screaming, rushing out of their rooms in bathrobes, heading for the stairwells.
We burst through the loading dock doors just as a massive black armored SUV screeched to a halt on the pavement, its sirens flashing.
The rear door flew open, and Chloe called out, "GET IN!"
Caleb and I tumbled into the leather interior of the armored vehicle. The driver slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing out of the Aspen Ridge Resort driveway just as three of Julian Vance’s black sedans came speeding up the mountain road.
Inside the SUV, Maya was sitting between Ava and Micah. Ava had wrapped her own warm winter scarf around the little girl's neck, and Micah was showing her how his plastic spaceship worked.
Maya looked up at me, her hazel eyes wide. "Are you my new mom?"
I looked at the terrified little girl, then looked at Caleb, who was sitting across from me, bleeding, weeping, and completely broken.

I took a deep breath, reached out, and took Maya’s small hand into mine.
"No, sweetie," I whispered softly. "I'm the woman who's going to make sure nobody ever hurts you again."
