Chapter 4 - The Shadow Partners

The night rain slicked the glass facade of the Reid Enterprises tower as Clara walked through the deserted lobby. The security guard, recognizing the daughter of the company's founder, unlocked the turnstiles without hesitation.
"Good evening, Mrs. Reid," the guard said respectfully. "I thought everyone had gone home."
"Not everyone, Marcus," Clara replied smoothly. "Is Mr. Vance or Mr. Sterling upstairs?"
"Mr. Sterling arrived about an hour ago, ma'am. He said he had late-night paperwork."
Clara rode the elevator to the 40th floor in silence. Richard Sterling was her late father’s co-founder and current chairman of the board. He was the man who had championed Julian’s rapid promotion to Chief Operating Officer after Clara's father passed away.
She pushed open the doors to the executive suite. The lights were off, save for the blue glow emanating from the corner office.
Through the glass door, Richard Sterling could be seen furiously typing at his computer terminal, a leather duffel bag sitting open on his mahogany desk.
Clara pushed the door open. The soft latch clicked, making Richard jump in his chair.
"Clara!" he gasped, hurriedly slamming his laptop shut. "What... what are you doing here at this hour? I heard about the awful misunderstanding at the airport. I was just reviewing emergency protocols—"
"Save it, Richard," Clara said softly, walking over to the bar and pouring two fingers of scotch into a glass. "The court signed the freeze order thirty minutes ago. That twelve-million-dollar wire you just tried to execute? It bounced."
Richard’s face darkened, the polite, paternal demeanor he had worn for decades stripping away completely. "You have no idea what you're dealing with, Clara. You think this was just Julian? Julian was a greedy fool who thought he was clever."
"And you were the architect," Clara said, taking a slow sip. "You used Julian’s greed to extract capital from my father’s trust. You told him how to forge my digital signatures. You promised him a clean break in Switzerland while you stayed behind to buy up the devalued shares of Reid Enterprises for pennies on the dollar."
Richard sneered, leaning back in his chair. "Your father was a visionary, but you... you're just an artist who inherited a throne she didn't earn. We built this company!"
"My father built this company," Clara corrected him, her voice ringing clear and strong. "You just collected a paycheck. And now, you're going to hand over your resignation, your board seat, and every share you own."
"Or what?" Richard laughed coldly. "You have no physical proof linking me to Julian's shell companies."

Clara reached into her pocket and pulled out a small black audio recorder. "Julian didn't trust you either, Richard. When I decrypted the drive in the lockbox, I found backup files. Julian recorded every phone call you made to him over the last six months. The FBI has the originals."
Richard’s smug expression collapsed entirely. The glass tumbler in his hand trembled.
