Chapter 5 - Gaslight on Trial

Three weeks later, the preliminary hearing for The United States v. Julian Reid and Richard Sterling commenced in the federal district court.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate stakeholders, and public observers. The scandal had rocked the financial world: a brilliant heiress framed by her own husband and her late father's closest business partner.

Julian sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, his hands restrained at his waist. He looked gaunt, the charismatic charm that had once captivated Clara completely shattered. Beside him, Richard Sterling sat with a team of high-priced defense attorneys who looked increasingly grim.

"Your Honor," Julian's lead defense counsel began, standing before the judge. "We move to suppress the digital evidence recovered at the airport. The defense contends that Mrs. Clara Reid acted as an unauthorized agent of law enforcement, violating my client's fourth amendment rights by executing illegal surveillance within their shared home."

The defense attorney turned to look at Clara, attempting an intimidating glare. "Mrs. Reid engaged in a systematic campaign to destroy my client's reputation due to personal marital discord. She maliciously planted the contraband item in Miss Vance's bag to fabricate a criminal narrative."

The judge looked down at the prosecutor. "Response?"

The lead federal prosecutor stood up calmly. "Your Honor, Mrs. Reid was a victim of ongoing corporate espionage and identity theft. Her actions were self-preservation against an active criminal enterprise operating out of her own home. Furthermore, the defense's argument ignores the forensic trail."

The prosecutor stepped forward and activated the courtroom presentation screen.

"We present Exhibit A: the digital logs from the home security server," the prosecutor announced. "These logs show that Mr. Reid systematically accessed Mrs. Reid's private accounts while she was asleep, using biometric spoofing software to forge her authorizations. Mrs. Reid did not fabricate a narrative; she caught a predator in the act."

The screen displayed clear, timestamped video footage of Julian creeping into Clara’s study, holding her sleeping hand up to a scanner to unlock her encrypted security key, and smiling at the camera as he executed the authorization.

A collective murmur gasped through the gallery.

Julian pulled at his restraints, his face flushed with rage. "She set me up! She knew I was doing it!" he screamed, breaking courtroom decorum. "Order in the court!" the judge shouted, slamming his gavel down sharply.

Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, posture erect, looking straight ahead. She didn't grant Julian even a glance. The man who had spent months trying to convince her she was losing her sanity was now unraveling before the entire world.
