Chapter 7 - The Desperate Move

Six months into the trial preparations, a sudden legal loophole allowed Julian to be released on high-dollar corporate bail, under strict home confinement and electronic ankle monitoring, funded by his wealthy distant relatives.
It was a desperate move by his defense team to gather personal documents from his former secondary residence—documents they claimed would prove his innocence.
That night, a storm battered the city, tearing down power lines and flooding low-lying streets.
Clara was working late in her personal residence—the historic brownstone her family had owned for generations. The security system gave a low chime, indicating a temporary power fluctuation caused by the storm.
Suddenly, the lights flickered and died, plunging the house into darkness.
Clara stood up from her desk, her hand reaching instantly for the emergency flashlight in her drawer. She heard a soft scrape of metal against wood from the ground floor foyer.
She didn't panic. She moved silently toward her study door, locking it from the inside and retrieving her phone to dial emergency services.
"Clara..." a voice hissed from the dark hallway outside.
It was Julian. He had cut his ankle monitor during the electrical storm, knowing the police response time would be delayed by the weather, and used a set of old spare keys to enter the house.
"I know you're in there, Clara!" Julian's voice was wild, unhinged, stripped of every trace of his former polish. "You ruined my life! You took everything! My money, my reputation, my freedom!"
He began throwing his weight against the heavy oak door of the study. The frame creaked under the impact.
"You thought you were so clever with your cameras and your flash drives!" he screamed, crashing against the door again. "I just want the master encryption key, Clara! Give me the master key for the offshore servers and I'll disappear! I'll leave the country!"
Clara stood on the other side of the room, her voice cold and calm through the door. "You never understood, Julian. The key isn't on a server. It's built into the system I created. And you are never getting out of this."
With a loud crack, the lock gave way, and Julian burst into the room, wet from the rain, his eyes wild with desperate fury. He lunged toward her.
Clara stepped side, pulling a heavy brass desk lamp and swinging it with full force. It struck Julian across the shoulder, sending him stumbling sideways into the glass bookshelf.

Before he could recover, the flash of red and blue police lights illuminated the room through the tall windows. Sirens wailed in the street outside.
"The moment the power dropped, my secondary silent alarm alerted federal marshals," Clara said, looking down at him as he groaned on the floor. "You just violated your bail terms, Julian. You're never getting out again."
