Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

With Julian and Richard Sterling held without bail, Clara turned her full attention to restoring Reid Enterprises. The company's stock had plummeted thirty percent following the arrests, and rival firms were circling like sharks, preparing hostile takeover bids.

Clara called an extraordinary emergency meeting of the board of directors.

The heavy mahogany doors of the executive boardroom closed at precisely 9:00 AM. Sitting around the table were seven board members—men and women who had stood by silently while Richard Sterling gradually stripped Clara of her operational authority over the past two years.

Clara walked to the head of the table, taking the seat that had once belonged to her father.

"Good morning," Clara said, her tone businesslike and unyielding. "You all know why we are here. Reid Enterprises is facing a crisis of credibility. The market believes we are compromised, vulnerable, and leaderless."

"Clara," one senior board member, Mr. Vance, began cautiously. "We sympathize with your ordeal, truly. But the board is considering bringing in an outside crisis management team to take executive control until this scandal blows over."

"That will not be necessary," Clara replied smoothly, sliding a stack of leather-bound dossiers across the table.

"What is this?" another member asked, opening the folder.

"That is a complete accounting of every vote cast by this board over the past eighteen months," Clara stated, her eyes sweeping over each face. "It details how each of you received indirect compensation, stock options, or committee appointments from Richard Sterling in exchange for overriding my father's core directives."

The room went dead silent. Several board members shifted uncomfortably, avoiding her gaze.

"You didn't orchestrate the fraud," Clara continued, leaning forward on her hands. "But your negligence and self-interest permitted it to happen. You turned a blind eye while my husband and Richard systematically dismantled this company's compliance protocols."

"Clara, you can't fire the entire board," Mr. Vance stammered.

"I don't need to fire you," Clara said softly. "As of eight o'clock this morning, using the recovered funds frozen by the federal court, I executed a legal buyout of Richard Sterling's seized shares. I now hold fifty-two percent of the voting stock in Reid Enterprises."

She stood up, looking down at the panel. "I am dissolving the current board effective immediately. Those of you who wish to avoid public shareholder lawsuits will tender your voluntary resignations by noon today. My team will appoint a new, independent board by tomorrow morning."

One by one, without a word, the board members gathered their papers and filed out of the room, leaving Clara standing alone in the quiet sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
