Chapter 4 - A Position of Trust

Chloe woke up the following morning in a bed so soft she felt as though she were floating on a cloud.

The guest suite overlooked the misty blue waters of Lake Michigan. Sunlight filtered through sheer silk curtains, casting warm light across mahogany furniture and plush rugs. On a armchair near the fireplace lay a set of brand-new clothes tailored to her size: a soft cream cashmere sweater, tailored wool trousers, and supple leather boots.

After a hot shower, Chloe dressed and walked down to the main floor, feeling entirely out of place in such immense luxury.

She found Arthur Russo sitting in a sunlit conservatory, surrounded by blooming orchids and tropical plants. He was wearing a warm cardigan, holding a cup of tea, and staring peacefully out at the lake. Beside him sat Dominic, reviewing financial documents on an iPad while softly talking to his father.

As Chloe entered, Arthur looked up. His eyes lit up with immediate recognition.

"Chloe!" the old man called out, his voice strong and happy. "The soup girl!"

Dominic set his iPad down instantly, standing up as Chloe approached. "Good morning, Chloe. I hope you slept well."

"I... I don't think I've ever slept that well in my life," Chloe admitted, stepping closer to Arthur. "Good morning, Mr. Russo. How are you feeling today?"

"Much better, dear," Arthur said, taking her hand in his thin, warm grip. "Dominic told me you're staying with us for a while. Good. The house is too quiet since Eleanor left."

Dominic watched the interaction with quiet intensity. For months, Arthur had been defensive and agitated around the private nurses Dominic had hired, constantly suspecting them of being strangers attempting to restrain him. But around Chloe, the old man was calm, settled, and trusting.

Dominic motioned for Chloe to follow him out into the adjacent library.

The room was vast, lined with thousands of leather-bound books and centered around a massive oak desk. Dominic turned to face her, resting his hands in his pockets.

"Yesterday, I told you that you were going to work for me," Dominic began. "I want to formalize the offer."

Chloe held her breath. "What kind of work, Mr. Russo?"

"My father's condition is deteriorating," Dominic explained, a shadow of grief touching his eyes. "The medical staff can handle his medication and physical therapy, but he lacks emotional safety. He remembers you. He trusts you. I want to hire you as his personal companion and life manager."

Chloe blinked. "I don't have a nursing degree, Mr. Russo."

"I don't need a nurse. I have four on payroll," Dominic said firmly. "I need someone with heart. Someone who sees him as a human being, not a medical condition. Your duties will be simple: spend time with him, accompany him on walks around the estate, ensure he feels safe, and manage his personal schedule."

He pulled a crisp, white contract from his desk and slid it toward her.

Chloe looked down at the document. When her eyes caught the salary line, her heart stopped beating entirely.

Annual Salary: $150,000.

Full medical, dental, and retirement benefits.

Private quarters on the estate grounds.

Vehicle allowance provided.

"This... this has to be a typo," Chloe gasped, her hands trembling as she pointed at the number. "One hundred and fifty thousand dollars? Mr. Russo, hostesses make twenty-eight thousand!"

"You aren't a hostess anymore, Chloe," Dominic said, stepping closer until he stood directly in front of her. "You are protecting the most valuable person in my life. To me, that salary is a bargain."

Chloe looked up into his striking gray eyes. There was no arrogance in his offer—only absolute sincerity and a protective warmth that made her feel safe for the first time in years.

"I... I accept," Chloe whispered.

"Good," Dominic said softly. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. The subtle touch made Chloe’s heart leap into her throat. "Welcome to the Russo family, Chloe."
