Chapter 5 - Shadows on the River

For three weeks, Chloe’s life was transformed into a dream.

Her days were spent in the peaceful, luxurious rhythm of the Russo estate. She walked through the snow-dusted gardens with Arthur, listened to his stories about his youth as a steelworker in South Chicago before Dominic rebuilt the family empire, and helped him paint watercolors in the sunroom. Under her gentle care, Arthur’s anxiety attacks dropped to zero. He laughed more, ate well, and felt deeply cherished.

In the evenings, Dominic would return from his corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago.

Despite his terrifying reputation in the city's business circles, inside the estate, Dominic was a man of quiet depth. He joined Chloe and Arthur for dinner every night, asking Chloe about her day, listening intently to her thoughts, and slowly opening up about his own life.

Chloe learned that Dominic had lost his mother to cancer four years ago, and that behind his formidable corporate exterior lay a man fiercely protective of the few people he loved.

A subtle, electric tension began to bloom between them. It was found in the way Dominic’s eyes lingered on her when she smiled, the quiet moments they shared drinking wine by the library fireplace after Arthur went to sleep, and the protective way he placed his hand on the small of her back when guiding her through the estate.

However, the peace was shattered on a Tuesday evening in late November.

Dominic was late returning from the city. Chloe was in the library, organizing Arthur's photo albums, when the heavy double doors flew open.

Dominic walked in, flanked by Marco and three senior security operatives. His face was thunderous, his charcoal suit coat thrown carelessly over his arm, his gray eyes blazing with cold fury.

"Marco, double the perimeter guards," Dominic commanded sharply. "No one enters the gates without my personal biometric clearance. Clear?"

"Understood, Boss," Marco replied, rushing out to carry out the orders.

Dominic stopped when he saw Chloe standing by the desk, holding a photo album. He immediately took a breath, trying to force the lethal tension out of his shoulders.

"Chloe," he said, his voice softening. "You should be in bed."

"Dominic... what happened?" Chloe asked, stepping toward him, her instincts sensing immediate danger. "Is it Arthur?"

"No," Dominic said, walking over to the bar and pouring two fingers of dark scotch. "It’s business. A rival firm—the Moretti Syndicate—just made a move on our riverfront shipping terminals."

Chloe knew the name Moretti. Victor Moretti was a ruthless, aging crime boss who had spent twenty years trying to wrestle control of Chicago’s private transport hubs away from the Russo family.

"They intercepted three of our cargo trucks tonight," Dominic explained, taking a slow sip of scotch. "They're desperate. Victor Moretti knows his empire is collapsing, so he’s trying to trigger a war before the city council approves our new commercial port development."

Dominic turned to look at her, his expression turning deeply serious. "Victor knows about you, Chloe."

Chloe froze. "About me?"

"You're Arthur’s companion. You live on my estate," Dominic said, stepping closer, his gray eyes filled with a fierce, protective light. "Victor thinks you are my weakness. He thinks targeting you or my father will force me to make concessions."

He reached out, taking her hand in his large, warm grip, squeezing it tight.

"I won't let anyone touch you, Chloe," Dominic vowed, his voice low and laced with absolute, terrifying power. "I brought you into my world to give you peace, not danger. If Moretti takes one step toward you, I will tear his entire organization out of this city."

Chloe looked into his eyes, feeling no fear of the man standing before her—only a deep, thrilling realization that she was falling completely, hopelessly in love with Dominic Russo.
