Chapter 8 - The Fall of Moretti

With Gregory Bell arrested by federal agents at midnight, the final obstacle remained: Victor Moretti.

Dominic was not a man to leave threats looming over his family. By Friday morning, he launched a surgical, legal, and financial assault that dismantled the Moretti Syndicate in less than twelve hours.

Using his vast network of corporate holdings and political leverage, Dominic bought out the mortgages on every property owned by Moretti’s shell companies. He presented federal prosecutors with undeniable evidence of Moretti’s racketeering, extortion, and armed assault at the cemetery.

By 4:00 PM on Friday, police cruisers and federal SWAT teams raided Moretti’s estate in Oak Brook, arresting Victor Moretti and his entire executive board without firing a single shot.

The shadow war that had threatened Chicago for two decades was officially, decisively over.

That evening, the Russo estate was bathed in a quiet, victorious calm.

Snow fell gently outside the tall windows of the library, dusting the pine trees in soft white coats. A bright fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm orange light across the leather armchairs and polished wood floors.

Arthur had gone to sleep early, exhausted but happy after painting a winter landscape with Chloe.

Chloe stood near the large glass windows, holding a glass of red wine, watching the snow fall over the lake. She wore a simple dark velvet dress that hugged her frame, her hair falling softly over her shoulders.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps sounded behind her.

Dominic walked into the library. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing only a black crisp shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the bandage wrapped around his left arm.

He walked up behind her, stopping so close she could feel the intense heat radiating from his body.

"Moretti is in federal custody," Dominic said softly, his voice deep and dark. "His syndicate is gone. You are completely safe, Chloe. Forever."

Chloe turned around to face him. "And Gregory?"

"He was denied bail," Dominic replied, stepping closer, closing the distance between them. "He will be sentenced by spring."

Chloe set her wine glass down on the window ledge. She looked up into Dominic’s striking face, taking in the razor-sharp line of his jaw, the raw power he carried, and the incredible tenderness reserved only for her.

"Thank you, Dominic," she whispered.

"Don't thank me," Dominic said, reaching out to cup her cheek in his warm palm. His thumb gently brushed across her lower lip. "You saved my father, Chloe. You brought warmth back into a house that had been cold for four years. You brought me back to life."

"Dominic..." her voice caught in her throat as his gray eyes locked onto hers with intense, breathtaking passion.

"I fell in love with you the moment I saw you holding that bowl of soup in the rain," Dominic confessed, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. "A girl standing up to a bully, protecting an old man who had nothing. You are the bravest, most beautiful woman I have ever known."

Chloe reached up, placing her hand over his, leaning into his touch. "I love you too, Dominic. So much."

Dominic leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that erased every memory of cold rain, fear, and loneliness. Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, melting into his embrace as the firelight danced around them.
