Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Boardroom

By eight o’clock that evening, the story of the canceled engagement had exploded across the upper crest of Pacific Palisades society.
Vanessa Cole did not go quietly. Within hours of being escorted off the Mercer property by private security, her father, Arthur Cole—a ruthless real estate tycoon with deep political connections—launched a vicious media smear campaign against Grant Mercer.
By the next morning, major financial journals and tabloid blogs were running headlines:
“Mercer Global CEO Scraps High-Society Wedding in Fit of Instability.” “Cole Corporation Prepares Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Shipping Giant.”
Grant sat in his glass-walled corner office on the top floor of the Mercer Tower in downtown San Francisco. He hadn't slept. He wore a crisp dark suit, but his eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw was set like concrete.
Across the glass desk sat his primary legal counsel and lifelong friend, David Vance.
“It’s a mess, Grant,” David said, laying out a stack of financial reports and newspaper clippings. “Arthur Cole is leveraging every connection he has on our board of directors. He’s telling investors that your grief over Claire has compromised your sanity and that you canceled the wedding in a mentally unstable rage.”
“Let him talk,” Grant said coldly, taking a sip of black coffee. “How stand the terminal contracts?”
“Arthur’s legal team filed an emergency motion to freeze the joint-venture capital accounts for the Pacific Deepwater Terminal,” David warned. “If we can't secure thirty million dollars in liquidity by the end of the month to replace the Cole Corporation’s stake, the city port authority will revoke our development license and hand it to Arthur.”
Grant’s hands gripped the edge of his desk. The terminal project had been Claire’s vision before she fell ill—a sustainable, zero-emission port facility designed to transform California’s coastal trade while protecting the surrounding ocean ecosystems. He had promised Claire on her deathbed that he would see it built.
“Arthur wants to destroy the project out of spite,” Grant said. “He wants to build a commercial oil refinery on that land instead.”
“Then you need to play ball, Grant,” David sighed. “Arthur’s team reached out an hour ago. They said if you issue a public apology to Vanessa, reinstate the engagement, and place Emma in a private board-approved boarding academy in Switzerland, Arthur will release the funds and proceed with the wedding.”
A pen snapped in Grant’s hand. Black ink spilled across his desk blotter.
“They want me to send three-year-old Emma to Switzerland?” Grant’s voice dropped to an arctic register. “Are they insane?”
“They know Emma is your weak point, Grant,” David said softly. “Vanessa told her father that the kid is a distraction. She convinced Arthur that as long as Emma is in your house, you will never focus fully on the corporate alliance between Mercer and Cole.”
Before Grant could reply, his personal phone rang. The caller ID showed the house landline from the Pacific Palisades estate.
Grant answered immediately. “Mrs. Bennett?”
The voice of his head housekeeper came through the speaker, panicked and breathless. “Mr. Mercer! Please come home immediately!”

Grant stood up so fast his leather chair crashed into the window behind him. “What happened? Is Emma hurt?”
“No, sir, she isn't hurt, but... the police are here!” Mrs. Bennett cried. “A team from Child Protective Services just pulled up to the gate with a court order! They say someone filed an emergency report claiming Emma is living in an unsafe, abusive environment!”
