Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Gate

The Mercer estate was swarming with vehicles when Grant’s black sports car tore through the security gates, spraying gravel across the driveway.

Two marked San Francisco Police Department cruisers were parked near the fountain, their red and blue lights flashing against the white marble facade. Beside them sat an unmarked silver sedan.

Grant leaped out of his car before the engine had even stopped, slamming his door shut.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Grant bellowed, marching straight toward a group of officials standing on his front steps.

A stern-looking woman in a charcoal grey suit stepped forward, holding a thick manila folder and a clipboard. Beside her stood two uniformed police officers.

“Grant Mercer?” the woman asked, checking her papers. “I am Brenda Vance from the Department of Children and Family Services. We received a high-priority mandatory report this morning alleging that your daughter, Emma Mercer, is subjected to emotional neglect, verbal abuse, and erratic behavior in this household.”

Grant’s face twisted in pure fury. “Emotional neglect? Verbal abuse? Who filed this report?!”

“Under state law, the reporter’s identity is confidential during an active investigation,” Brenda Vance replied smoothly. “However, given the high profile of your family and the specific evidence submitted—including audio recordings of screaming inside this house yesterday afternoon—we are required to conduct an immediate home inspection and temporarily place Emma in protective custody pending a safety evaluation.”

“Protective custody? Over my dead body!” Grant shouted, stepping in front of the front doors, his tall frame completely blocking the entrance.

Evelyn Mercer stepped out from the foyer, carrying a sleeping Emma wrapped in a pink blanket. Mrs. Bennett was right behind her, weeping silently into her apron.

“Grant, don't raise your voice,” Evelyn begged, her face pale. “They have a signed warrant from a county judge.”

Grant looked at the legal document Brenda held out. At the bottom was the signature of Judge Harold Cole—Arthur Cole’s second cousin.

The web of corruption was so obvious it made Grant’s stomach turn. Vanessa and her father weren't just trying to sabotage his business; they were trying to tear his child away from him to force him onto his knees.

Brenda Vance gestured to the police officers. “Mr. Mercer, step aside. If you resist this court order, we will arrest you for obstruction of justice, which will only harm your custody standing in court.”

Emma woke up from the commotion. Seeing the police officers and the flashing lights, she let out a frightened cry and stretched her small arms toward her father.

“DADDY!”

The sound of his daughter’s terror tore through Grant’s heart. He ignored the officers, pushed past Brenda Vance, and scooped Emma into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest.

“Daddy’s here, baby,” Grant whispered, pressing his face into her soft dark curls. “I’ve got you. Nobody is taking you anywhere.”

He turned to Brenda Vance, his eyes blazing with an absolute, terrifying authority.

“Listen to me very carefully,” Grant said, his voice ringing across the driveway like thunder. “If any officer here lays a finger on my child, I will release every piece of security footage recorded on this property yesterday afternoon. I have four high-definition cameras in the grand living room that recorded Vanessa Cole screaming at my three-year-old daughter, threatening her, and destroying family heirlooms.”

Brenda Vance froze. Her eyes flicked nervously toward the unmarked sedan parked behind her.

Grant noticed the reaction immediately. He glanced at the sedan and saw dark tinted windows. Inside, sitting in the passenger seat, was Vanessa Cole, watching the entire scene through a pair of designer sunglasses.
