The war between Mercer Global and the Cole Corporation escalated into open corporate warfare over the next ten days.
Arthur Cole officially pulled his forty-million-dollar funding from the Pacific Deepwater Terminal project, triggering a financial clause that threatened to force Mercer Global into default if replacement capital wasn't secured within two weeks. At the same time, Arthur used his media connections to launch a whisper campaign in the financial markets, driving Mercer Global’s stock price down by twelve percent.
Grant worked twenty hours a day from his home office, refusing to leave Emma’s side. He moved his core executive team directly to the Palisades estate, turning the grand dining room into a command center.
One evening, while going through Claire’s old personal papers in search of original terminal design documents, Grant stumbled upon a locked metal document box hidden inside Claire’s desk in the west wing.
The key was missing, but Grant used a small screwdriver to force the latch open.
Inside lay a stack of yellowed legal documents, blue-printed site surveys from five years ago, and an encrypted USB drive labeled: Project Sentinel - Confidential.
Grant plugged the USB drive into his laptop. A password prompt appeared on the screen.
He hesitated for a second, then typed in eight characters: 05-14-2021—Emma’s birthday.
The drive unlocked instantly.
Folders containing hundreds of financial statements, corporate emails, and environmental reports filled the screen. As Grant began opening the files, his eyes widened in sheer shock.
Claire had not just designed the Pacific Deepwater Terminal; she had conducted a deep-level forensic investigation into Arthur Cole’s previous shipping ventures prior to her death.
According to Claire’s findings, Arthur Cole’s primary logistics company, Cole Maritime, had been illegally dumping toxic chemical runoff into the Pacific coastal waters for over a decade to avoid paying federal waste-disposal fees. The very land Arthur was trying to buy for his proposed oil refinery was contaminated—and Arthur was planning to use the joint venture with Mercer Global to shift the legal liability of the toxic cleanup onto Grant’s company!
Grant stared at the screen, his blood running cold.
“Claire knew...” Grant whispered to himself, his breath catching in his throat. “She knew what Arthur Cole was doing before she got sick...”
Attached to the main file was a personal audio memo recorded by Claire just three months before she passed away. Grant’s hands shook as he clicked Play.
