Chapter 4 - The Security Footage

The silence on the driveway was deafening.
Grant took three steps toward the silver sedan, holding Emma securely in his left arm. He tapped his knuckle hard against the passenger window.
The window slowly rolled down. Vanessa sat there, trying to maintain an expression of indifferent arrogance, but her hands were trembling in her lap.
“You forgot about the security system, didn't you, Vanessa?” Grant said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “When my father built this house, he installed military-grade, motion-activated audio and video recording in every common room. Every word you said to Emma yesterday... every threat... every scream... it’s all stored on a secure cloud server.”
Vanessa’s face went dead white. “Grant... you wouldn't dared leak that to the press. It would ruin my family’s reputation!”
“I don't give a damn about your reputation,” Grant spat.
He turned back to Brenda Vance and the police officers. “Miss Vance, would you like to come inside and watch the unedited 4K footage of yesterday’s event? Would you like to see how your ‘mandatory reporter’ neglected to mention that she was the one verbally abusing a toddler?”
Brenda Vance swallowed hard, looking back at the signed warrant in her hand. “Mr. Mercer... if such footage exists, it would completely invalidate the grounds of this emergency petition.”
“It exists. And my attorney is transmitting it directly to the District Attorney’s office as we speak,” Grant stated. “Now get off my property before I file federal charges against you and Judge Cole for abuse of judicial power.”
Brenda didn't argue. She turned on her heel, signaled to the police officers, and marched back to her car. The police officers, realizing they had been used as pawns in a wealthy family’s bitter vendetta, quickly tipped their hats to Grant, apologized, and drove away.
Vanessa tried to roll up her window, but Grant reached through the opening and rested his hand on the door frame, leaning in close.
“This was your last mistake, Vanessa,” Grant said softly. “You tried to take my daughter. Now I’m going to take everything your father owns.”
Vanessa trembled, shrinking back against her leather seat. “You can't touch my father! He has half the city council in his pocket!”
“Then he better get a bigger pocket,” Grant said.
He stepped back and let the car speed away, leaving a cloud of dust in the driveway.
Evelyn walked up beside her son, placing a gentle hand on his back. “Grant... I am so sorry. I brought that woman into our lives. I pushed you to move on from Claire because I couldn't stand seeing you so sad. I thought I was helping, but I almost destroyed us.”
Grant looked at his mother, the anger in his eyes softening into exhaustion. “You didn't know, Mom. But now we do. And we’re going to fight back.”

Emma looked up at her father, rubbing her eyes with her small fists. “Daddy, is the mean lady gone?”
Grant kissed the top of her head. “She’s gone, sweetheart. And she’s never coming back.”
