Chapter 2 - The Calculated Trap

Elizabeth Blackwell did not tolerate defiance, and Lily’s quiet resilience was infuriating her. The matriarch had already selected the woman she believed belonged at Ethan’s side: Victoria Sterling, the daughter of a prominent shipping magnate and a childhood friend of Ethan’s. Victoria possessed the wealth, lineage, and social standing Elizabeth deemed necessary for the Blackwell family name. A maid from the outskirts of New Haven was an insult to their legacy.
To destroy Lily’s standing permanently, Elizabeth devised a plan that went beyond mere overwork. She called Victoria over for an afternoon luncheon on the patio.
"Victoria, my dear," Elizabeth said, offering a delicate china cup. "Ethan returns in ten days. I need him to see this girl for what she truly is—a scheming opportunist after his wealth."
Victoria smiled thinly, her manicured fingers resting on her designer handbag. "Ethan has always had a soft spot for charity cases, Elizabeth. But surely he'll see reason once he realizes she isn't as pure as she pretends to be."
Later that evening, Elizabeth summoned Lily to the master suite. The room was grand, decorated in rich mahogany and cream velvet. On the vanity sat Elizabeth’s prize possession: an heirloom diamond-and-emerald brooch given to her by Ethan’s late grandfather, valued at over half a million dollars.
"Lily," Elizabeth said coldly without turning around. "Clean the vanity mirror and polish the mahogany surface. Make sure you don't touch the jewelry box."
"Yes, ma'am," Lily replied, stepping forward slowly. Her legs were trembling from twelve hours of continuous labor, and a faint dizzy spell washed over her. She gripped the edge of the wooden desk to steady herself before beginning her work.
When Lily finished, Elizabeth dismissed her with a wave of her hand. But twenty minutes later, a blood-curdling scream echoed down the grand hallway.
Mrs. Brooks, Richard Blackwell, and several house staff rushed toward the master suite. Elizabeth stood in the center of the room, her hand pressed against her chest, pointing dramatically at her open jewelry box.
"It's gone!" Elizabeth cried out, her eyes locking onto Lily, who was standing near the doorway holding a tray of clean linens. "My emerald brooch! It was right here before she entered the room!"
"Elizabeth, calm down," Richard said, stepping forward with a heavy sigh. "Are you sure you didn't misplace it?"
"Misplace my mother-in-law's heirloom?!" Elizabeth snapped, her eyes ablaze with theatrical fury. "I left it on the vanity while she was cleaning! Search her quarters! Search her room right now!"
"Mrs. Blackwell, I didn't touch it!" Lily gasped, the blood draining from her face. "I swear on my life, I didn't take anything!"
"Search her!" Elizabeth demanded.
Before Richard could intervene, Elizabeth's personal assistant marched down to the staff quarters, accompanied by a smug Victoria Sterling. Minutes later, the assistant returned holding the shining emerald brooch. It had been found tucked beneath the thin mattress of Lily’s bed.
Lily gasped, backing away in sheer horror. "No... no! Someone put that there! Jaden and I didn't touch it!"
"You ungrateful thief!" Elizabeth spat, stepping toward Lily with her hand raised. "I gave you a roof over your head, and you repay my family by stealing our heirlooms!"
"I didn't steal it!" Lily sobbed, looking frantically at Richard. "Mr. Blackwell, please! You know me!"
Richard looked deeply troubled, staring at the floor. He knew his wife’s ruthlessness, but the evidence was right in front of him. "Lily... how could it be under your mattress?"

"Because she was framed!" Jaden shouted, bursting through the crowd and stepping between his sister and Elizabeth. "You put it there! You've been trying to destroy her since the day you got here!"
"Silence, boy!" Elizabeth hissed. "I am calling the police. Both of you will be behind bars before the sun comes up."
