Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

The threat of police intervention hung over the mansion like a dark cloud. Mrs. Brooks, recognizing the sheer malice behind Elizabeth’s setup, quietly pulled Richard into the study.

"Richard, you cannot let her do this," Mrs. Brooks urged, her voice steady but urgent. "Lily Carter is as honest as the day is long. If Ethan comes home to find his mother put the woman he loves in prison on false charges, he will never forgive you. He will sever ties with this family forever."

Richard rubbed his temples, weighed down by years of yielding to his wife’s aggressive demeanor. "Elizabeth is relentless, Evelyn. If I openly oppose her without proof, she will drag this family through a public scandal."

"Then buy time," Mrs. Brooks demanded. "Do not call the police. Dismiss the girl from her duties until Ethan returns."

Instead of calling the police, Elizabeth delivered a devastating compromise: Lily was not allowed to leave the property, but she was stripped of her title, confined to manual labor in the outer gardens and basement laundry, and forbidden from using the household phones. Elizabeth confiscated Lily's personal cell phone under the guise of an "internal investigation."

For the next four days, Lily was pushed far beyond the human limit. Elizabeth assigned her to clean the damp, subterranean wine cellars and wash heavy stone walkways in the freezing morning rain.

Lily’s body began to fail her. A persistent fever took root in her chest, making every breath feel like fire. She couldn't sleep; her body shivered uncontrollably under the thin blankets of her room. Yet, she refused to abandon Jaden, who was forced to work alongside her, clearing heavy debris near the stables.

On the fifth night, a severe thunderstorm struck Briar Glen. Rain poured in sheets, battering the roof of the estate. Elizabeth, noticing the patio stones were muddy, ordered Lily out into the storm at eleven o'clock at night to scrub the stone steps with a heavy brush.

"Mom, please, she's sick!" Jaden cried, begging Elizabeth in the foyer. "She has a fever! She can barely stand!"

"She will work off the dishonor she brought upon this house," Elizabeth said coldly, turning her back.

Out in the torrential rain, Lily knelt on the cold granite. The wind whipped her wet hair across her face. Her vision blurred, double images of the stone steps dancing before her eyes. Her hands shook violently as she pushed the bristle brush across the stone.

Ethan... she thought, her lungs gasping for air. Ethan, I tried... I tried so hard...

Her head grew impossibly heavy. The sound of the thunder faded into a distant, muffled hum. Her body surrendered to the burning fever and absolute exhaustion. Lily collapsed sideways onto the wet stone, her eyes drifting shut as the icy rain fell relentlessly over her motionless form.
