Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Foyer

Ethan gathered Lily into his arms, lifting her weak, limp body effortlessly against his chest. He turned and kicked open the doors back into the warm, chandelier-lit foyer, his boots dripping rainwater and mud across the pristine marble floor.

"Help!" Ethan thundered, his voice echoing through the multi-story home like a lightning strike. "Call an ambulance! NOW!"

The sudden roar brought the household to life. Lights flickered on upstairs. Mrs. Brooks rushed out of the servant wing, gasping in horror when she saw Lily motionless in Ethan's arms.

"Dear God!" Mrs. Brooks cried, immediately grabbing a thick wool blanket from the hall closet and rushing to cover Lily. "Ethan, she's been out there for hours!"

Footsteps echoed down the grand curved staircase. Elizabeth Blackwell stepped into view, wearing a sweeping silk robe, her husband Richard following closely behind.

"Ethan?" Elizabeth said, her voice dropping in momentary shock before she quickly recovered her poise. "What is the meaning of this dramatic entrance? Why are you back from Europe early?"

Ethan turned toward his mother. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, were burning with a terrifying, unbridled rage that made even Elizabeth take a step back.

"What did you do to her?" Ethan’s voice was dangerously quiet, a low growl that shook the air in the room.

"I did nothing," Elizabeth said smoothly, crossing her arms. "The girl was performing her duties. She was caught stealing, Ethan. She was caught red-handed with my emerald brooch hidden in her room. I exercised extreme leniency by not having her arrested immediately!"

"Stealing?" Ethan barked out a harsh, bitter laugh, tears of fury mixing with the rainwater on his face. "Lily Carter wouldn't take a penny that didn't belong to her! You set her up!"

"How dare you accuse your own mother for the sake of a common servant!" Elizabeth snapped, her voice rising in outrage. "She is a maid, Ethan! A nobody! She used her pathetic little innocence to manipulate you, and when I caught her true nature, she collapsed from her own guilt!"

At that moment, Jaden came running down the hall, his eyes red from crying. "It's all lies!" Jaden screamed, pointing at Elizabeth. "She took Lily's phone! She starved her! She made her work eighteen hours a day in the freezing cold until she fainted! She put that brooch in our room herself!"

Richard stepped between them, his face pale. "Ethan, calm down. Let's get the girl medical attention first—"

"Get out of my way, Father," Ethan warned, his tone so lethal Richard froze.

Ethan looked down at Lily. Her head rested weakly against his collarbone, her shallow breathing rattling in her chest. He wrapped his arms tighter around her, shielding her shivering body from the cold.

"Hear me clearly, Mother," Ethan said, looking directly into Elizabeth’s eyes with absolute hatred. "If anything happens to her—if she suffers even a fraction of permanent harm because of what you did tonight—I will strip you of every dime, every title, and every privilege associated with the Blackwell name. I will burn this legacy to the ground before I let you hurt her again."

Without waiting for a response, Ethan turned and carried Lily back out into the storm, placing her gently in the back seat of his SUV and speeding away toward the nearest hospital, leaving Elizabeth standing in the foyer, shaken and speechlessly enraged.
