Chapter 5 - Pre-Wedding Pressures

The final dress rehearsal for the Sterling-Wade wedding was held at the historic St. Jude’s Cathedral in the heart of the city’s old money district. The vaulted stone ceilings and stained-glass windows gave the space a cold, solemn grandiosity.

Celeste stood at the altar, her white silk train cascading down the stone steps like a frozen waterfall. She was laughing with the wedding coordinator, her demeanor the epitome of a joyful, stressed bride managing the final details of her perfect day.

James stood at the back of the nave, watching her from the shadows of the heavy oak columns.

"You look like a man attending a funeral, James," a sharp, rasping voice said from behind him.

James didn't turn around. He knew the voice. Richard Vance stepped up beside him, wearing a bespoke double-breasted suit, a gold watch chain looping across his vest.

"Just thinking about the scale of it all, Richard," James said, his voice smooth and neutral. "It’s a lot of theater for a contract signing."

"Marriage is a contract, my boy," Richard said, letting out a dry, rattling chuckle. "The romance is just the marketing department's way of making the terms palatable to the public. Speaking of terms, Celeste tells me you haven't finalized the share-transfer addendum yet. The board is meeting at nine o'clock on Saturday morning. We need those Vanguard automated logistics protocols fully integrated into the corporate entity before the opening bell."

"The Vanguard protocols are highly sensitive, Richard," James said, turning his head slightly to look the older billionaire in the eye. "I reviewed some data this morning that suggests an external entity has been attempting to scrape our source code. I’m thinking about locking the entire architecture into an independent, non-transferable family trust before the wedding vows. To protect our joint assets from corporate espionage."

Richard’s face went instantly rigid, the aristocratic smooth surface fracturing into a cold, hard mask. His fingers tightened around his gold cane. "A family trust? That would completely defeat the purpose of the consolidation, James. Vanguard’s code is the primary value driver of this merger. If you lock it away, the Vance board will view it as a breach of good faith."

"I’m just looking out for our future, Richard," James said, using the exact phrase Celeste had used the morning before. "I’m sure Celeste wouldn't want our combined empire vulnerable to thieves."

Across the cathedral, Celeste noticed the two men talking. Her expression shifted into a look of sharp, hyper-focused alertness. She excused herself from the coordinator and walked down the long carpeted aisle toward them, her silk dress rustling against the stone.

"Is everything alright, boys?" she asked, her eyes moving rapidly between James and Richard. "You look so serious. We’re supposed to be practicing our vows."

"Your fiancé is thinking about changing the financial structure of the merger, Celeste," Richard said, his tone carrying a subtle, razor-sharp edge of warning. "He wants to put the automated routing software into a private trust."

Celeste’s breath caught, her eyes widening for a fraction of a second before she forced a bright, dismissive laugh. "Oh, James, sweetie... we talked about this. A private trust is so old-fashioned. It complicates the tax allocations completely. Our family lawyers already spent months structuring the share-transfer addendum to ensure everything moves smoothly. You trust me, don't you?"

She reached out, her fingers wrapping around his arm, her body leaning into his with a calculated, desperate warmth.

James looked down at her hand on his arm, then up at her beautiful, lying face. "Of course I trust you, Celeste. That’s why I’ve decided to sign the paperwork during the wedding reception on Friday night. In front of the entire board. Let's make it a celebration of our complete partnership."

Celeste’s shoulders visibly relaxed, a deep, triumphant satisfaction shining in her eyes. "Oh, thank you, darling. You won't regret it. I promise."

"I know," James said softly. "I’m certain nobody will ever forget Friday night."
