Chapter 7 - The Final Week

The air in the reception area of Vanguard Holdings was thick with the scent of fresh white orchids and expensive champagne, delivered early for the pre-wedding corporate mixer. Employees from both Vanguard and Vance Logistics were mingling, their voices creating a loud, polite roar beneath the vaulted ceilings.
James stood near the grand staircase, a glass of mineral water in his hand, watching the crowd.
"Mr. Sterling?"
He looked down. Rosa, the cleaning lady, was standing beside him, wearing her neat gray uniform. Her face was pale, her hands twisting her apron with an intense, nervous energy.
"Rosa," James said, stepping away from a group of junior executives to give her his full attention. "Is everything alright? Do you need something?"
"I... I need to talk to you, Mr. Sterling," she whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the security guards near the elevators. "In private. Please."
James nodded once, leading her through the secondary service door into a quiet, carpeted hallway used by the administrative staff.
"It’s about Maya," Rosa said, her voice trembling, tears welling in her eyes. "I found something in her backpack last night. A black notebook. It has names, Mr. Sterling. It has times. It talks about Miss Celeste and a black car in the garage. I... I asked her what she was doing, and she said she was working for you. She said she was your secret lookout."
Rosa looked at him with an expression of profound, maternal terror. "Please, Mr. Sterling... we are poor people. We cannot be involved in whatever is happening between you and these big companies. If Miss Celeste finds out Maya is watching her, we will lose our jobs. We could lose everything."
James felt a deep, heavy pang of guilt. He had recruited a seven-year-old girl into a corporate war zone because she was invisible, but he had forgotten the weight that invisibility carried for the people who lived it every day.
He reached out, his hands gently grasping Rosa’s shoulders, his voice steady and filled with absolute sincerity. "Rosa, look at me. Maya is perfectly safe. I would never, ever let anything happen to her or to you."
"But the notebook—"
"The notebook is the reason I still own this company," James said softly. "Maya found something very dangerous that Miss Celeste had hidden under my desk. She didn't just help me; she saved hundreds of jobs in this building. Including yours."
He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small, sealed white envelope, sliding it into Rosa’s apron pocket. "Inside that envelope is a certified bank draft. It’s a bonus for Maya’s specialized consulting services over the last three weeks. It’s enough to buy a house, Rosa. A real house with yellow windows, just like the ones she likes to draw. And your contract with this company is now permanent, with full executive benefits."
May you like
Rosa gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at him in utter shock. "Mr. Sterling... I... I don't know what to say."
"Don't say anything," James smiled, his eyes warming for the first time in days. "Just let Maya keep her notebook for three more days. On Friday night, the secret will be over, and you won't ever have to be careful around people with money again."
