Chapter 9 - The Wedding Day—The Confrontation

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was an ocean of white roses, crystal chandeliers, and three hundred of the most powerful corporate and political figures on the East Coast. The ceremony at the cathedral had been flawless—vows exchanged, rings placed, a legal marriage certificate generated under the watchful eyes of the city's elite.

Now, it was ten o'clock in the evening, the hour of the ceremonial merger signing.

A long mahogany table had been placed on the raised stage at the front of the ballroom. Sitting on the table were two identical leather-bound folders containing the execution papers for the Vance-Vanguard consolidation.

Richard Vance stood at the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the massive space. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we do not merely celebrate the union of James Sterling and Celeste Wade; we celebrate the creation of a global logistics powerhouse. I call upon the bride and groom to join me on stage to finalize the contracts that will change the face of international commerce."

The crowd erupted into polite, thunderous applause as James and Celeste walked up the steps, their hands interlocked. Celeste looked breathlessly beautiful in her white lace gown, her face a mask of triumphant, absolute success.

A man in a sharp gray suit—the state notary, paid a fifty-thousand-dollar cash retainer by Richard Vance’s trust—stepped forward, opening the leather folders to the signature pages.

"James, darling," Celeste whispered, handing him a heavy silver fountain pen. "For our future."

James took the pen. He looked down at the document in front of him. It was the modified version—the trapdoor contract prepared by Thomas Keane’s legal team.

He signed his name with a smooth, unhurried stroke: James Sterling.

Celeste’s eyes flashed with a wild, predatory joy. She immediately seized the pen, signing her own name right beneath his: Celeste Wade-Sterling.

The notary took the folder, stamped the pages with his official state seal, and nodded once toward Richard Vance in the front row. It was done. The transfer was irrevocable.

James stepped up to the microphone, his expression completely calm, his voice carrying a resonant, unyielding authority that silenced the room in less than three seconds.

"Ladies and gentlemen," James said, his gaze drifting across the crowded ballroom until it locked onto Richard Vance. "I want to thank you all for attending tonight. You have just witnessed a historical event. But it isn't the event you think it is."

The applause died out completely, replaced by a sudden, anxious rustle of fabric. Celeste’s smile froze on her face.

"Two weeks ago," James continued, his voice perfectly steady, "a digital listening device was discovered under my executive desk. The device was intended to scrape Vanguard’s automated routing source code to facilitate a hostile takeover on behalf of Vance Logistics."

A loud, collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Richard Vance stood up from his chair, his face a dark, angry purple. "James! What is the meaning of this theater? You are slandering my company in front of our investors!"

"I’m not slandering anyone, Richard," James said, reaching into his dinner jacket and pulling out a small, remote control device. He pressed the button.

The massive projection screens behind the stage—intended to display a slideshow of the couple’s romantic photos—instantly switched to a high-definition video feed.

It was the security footage from James’s office. The crowd watched in absolute, horrified silence as Celeste Wade walked behind the desk, reached into her bag, and taped the black recorder to the underside of the drawer. Then, her voice blasted through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system:

"After the wedding, he'll sign the merger. When he signs, the company is ours... I’ve spent two years listening to a man talk about his childhood poverty... It’s exhausting. I want my payout."
