Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The rain hammered against the reinforced glass windows of Thomas Keane’s subterranean security office, located three floors beneath the Vanguard tower. The room was filled with the low hum of cooling fans and the cold blue light of a dozen high-definition monitors tracking every corner of the corporate empire.

James stood behind Thomas’s chair, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on a screen displaying a mountain of financial data.

"We found the leak's internal pipeline," Thomas said, tapping a key to highlight a series of encrypted file transfers originating from the human resources department. "Celeste didn't install the bug herself because she has technical expertise—she had help. The director of our internal IT security, Arthur Vance... is Richard Vance’s nephew. He’s been providing her with the hardware and the internal access codes for eighteen months."

James let out a long, slow whistle. "They didn't just plant a mole; they bought the entire security gate."

"But they made one fatal error," Thomas smiled, a cold, predatory expression crossing his rugged face. "They assumed you were an ordinary founder who wouldn't look beneath the surface of his own life. Yesterday morning, following your instructions, we leaked the fake code-trust documents into the server that Arthur Vance monitors. Last night, at 11:14 p.m., Celeste accessed the audio log from your office bug. She heard your 'private conversation' with me where you stated that the trust documents were complete, but that you would hold off on executing them if she signed a secondary counter-indemnity clause."

"Did she take the bait?" James asked.

"Line, sinker, and boat," Thomas said, pulling up a transcript of an encrypted text message thread recovered from Celeste’s satellite relay.

Celeste: He’s terrified of an external leak. He’s going to execute the trust unless I present him with the finalized share addendum before the ceremony. Have the legal team finalize the papers tonight. I’ll make sure he signs it right after the vows. Richard: Excellent. The notary is on our payroll. Once the signature is recorded, the transfer is irrevocable. Do not lose your focus now.

James walked over to the main monitor, looking at the digital image of the share-transfer addendum Celeste’s lawyers had prepared. It looked perfectly standard on the surface, but a deep, forensic analysis of the fine print revealed an embedded clause that stripped James of his executive authority the moment his signature was verified by the state notary.

"Thomas," James said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute authority. "I want our legal team to draft an exact replica of this addendum. Same font, same formatting, same signatures. But we are changing one specific section. Section 14.4."

"What are we changing it to?"

James smiled, a cold, brilliant light shining in his eyes. "Instead of transferring my voting shares to Celeste Wade, the modified document will state that upon the signing of this contract, Celeste Wade formally relinquishes all claims to marital property, admits to a systematic conspiracy to engage in corporate espionage against Vanguard Holdings, and assigns her entire personal offshore asset portfolio to an independent educational foundation managed by the company's community outreach program."

Thomas stared at James for a long moment, then let out a low, appreciative chuckle. "That’s a corporate execution, James."

"She wanted a contract, Thomas," James said, leaning over the desk. "I’m just giving her one she didn't read carefully enough. Now, where is Maya?"

"She’s upstairs with her mother," Thomas said. "She’s been keeping her log updated every hour. She just noted that Celeste received a delivery from a private courier ten minutes ago. It was the original copy of the share addendum."

"Perfect," James said. "The stage is set. Let's make sure the audience is full."
