Chapter 2 - The Network of Spies

"Mrs. Bennett," Evelyn Cross’s voice came through the phone—cool, crisp, and commanding. "I’ve reviewed your initial message. Let’s establish ground rules before we talk about your husband. First: do not change your behavior around him. Do not let him know you are onto him. Second: secure every piece of physical and digital evidence you have. Third: tell me about this court evaluator arriving Thursday."

I sat at the kitchen counter, staring at the exact spot where Ryan had stood hours earlier.

"Her name is Vanessa," I said, my voice shaking slightly despite my best efforts. "Ryan mentioned her on the recording. He said she thinks she’s just stopping by as a favor, but that he’ll have something official after that."

There was a sharp pause on the other end of the line.

"Vanessa... Vanessa Thorne?" Evelyn asked.

"He didn't say her last name. Just Vanessa."

"Describe her if you can, or tell me what firm she's affiliated with."

"I don't know the firm," I admitted, panic rising in my throat. "All I know is Ryan said, 'Vanessa comes Thursday. She thinks she’s just stopping by as a favor.'"

Evelyn let out a low, dangerous hum. "A favor. In family court, 'favors' from private evaluators usually mean personal relationships, financial kickbacks, or professional favors traded behind closed doors. Let me make a few calls. Naperville family court is a small pond. If Vanessa Thorne is operating off-books as a partisan evaluator without a formal court order, she’s walking into a federal trap."

"Can she take Lily?" I asked, the fear I had locked away threatening to break free. "If she comes Thursday and writes a biased report—"

"She cannot take your child without a judge's emergency order, Mrs. Bennett," Evelyn interrupted firmly. "And a judge will not issue an emergency order without verified, credible evidence of immediate danger or extreme incompetence—neither of which exist. What your husband is trying to do is build an unverified paper trail. He wants a private evaluation report filled with subjective observations like 'mother appeared fatigued, anxious, and disorganized' to attach to an emergency custody filing on Friday afternoon."

Friday afternoon.

The classic legal ambush. File a motion at 4:30 PM on Friday when the courts are closing, sealing the child away for the entire weekend before a mother can respond.

"He planned the whole thing," I whispered. "He’s been doing it for months."

"Then we are going to use his own architecture to bury him," Evelyn said, her tone hardening into pure steel. "Listen to me closely, Claire. Tonight, when he is asleep, I want you to export every audio file, every text, every photo of that rabbit, and upload it to a secure cloud drive I am going to email you. Tomorrow, I will file an emergency motion for a court-appointed forensic guardian ad litem and a protective order against unauthorized private evaluations. But for Thursday... let Vanessa walk right through that front door."

"Let her in?" I gasped. "Why?"

"Because if she comes into your home thinking she’s executing a hit job for your husband, and she steps right into a recorded trap where her own bias is exposed on the record, she loses her license, and your husband loses his credibility permanently," Evelyn explained smoothly. "Do you trust me?"

I looked toward Lily’s empty bedroom, then down at the pink rabbit sitting innocently on the nightstand.

"I trust you," I said.
