Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Melissa Ward

By Friday afternoon, the legal storm surrounding Ryan Bennett had blown open like the doors of a breached vault.
Evelyn Cross had moved with terrifying speed. Not only had she filed the emergency protective order and secured full temporary custody of Lily for me, but she had also submitted the entire digital archive—including the audio logs, the pink rabbit recordings, and Ryan’s text threads with Melissa Ward—directly to the DuPage County Family Court and Ryan’s corporate employer.
I sat at the kitchen island, drinking a cup of hot chamomile tea while sunlight streamed through the window.
Lily was sitting on the living room rug, happily coloring in a new unicorn coloring book I had bought her that morning. The pink rabbit sat beside her, but the batteries had been removed. Lily didn't care about the toy's voice anymore; she only cared that the apartment was quiet, safe, and filled with Mommy’s laughter.
My phone rang on the counter.
The caller ID displayed Evelyn Cross.
I swiped to answer immediately. "Evelyn? What’s happened?"
"It’s over, Claire," Evelyn said, her voice sounding deeply satisfied. "Ryan’s firm just terminated him with cause for misuse of corporate resources and professional misconduct regarding the LLC apartment he rented with Melissa Ward."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding for months. "And Melissa?"
"Melissa Ward has retained her own attorney and is currently trying to distance herself as fast as humanly possible," Evelyn replied. "She realized Ryan lied to her about the status of your marriage, telling her you were already separated and legally unstable. When she heard the audio of him coaching your daughter, she packed her bags and hasn't answered his calls since last night."
"What about the court evaluator? Vanessa Thorne?"
"Vanessa tendered her resignation to the state licensing board this morning before they could suspend her credentials," Evelyn said sharply. "Her career in family evaluations is effectively over. She tried to claim she was deceived by Ryan, but our firm submitted the communications proving she agreed to perform an off-books partisan hit job."
"Thank you, Evelyn," I whispered, tears of profound relief finally spilling over my lashes. "You saved my family."
"I didn't save your family, Claire," Evelyn corrected me gently. "You saved your family the moment you didn't let fear make you scream. You outplayed a chess master using his own board."
After hanging up, I walked into the living room and sat down on the rug next to Lily.

She looked up, her big brown eyes shining with happiness, and held out a purple crayon. "Look, Mommy! I made a rainbow!"
"It's the most beautiful rainbow I've ever seen, sweetie," I said, wrapping my arms around her and pulling her close.
