Chapter 4 - Wednesday Night’s Rehearsal

Wednesday night arrived with an unnatural, suffocating tension.
Ryan came home bearing a bouquet of expensive white lilies—my favorite. He handed them to me with a tender, apologetic smile that made my skin crawl.
"I know things have been tense, Claire," he said softly, wrapping his arms around my shoulders. "I just want you to know I’m here for you. Whatever happens, we’re going to get through it."
I forced my arms to wrap around his waist, pressing my face against his chest so he wouldn't see the dead, icy glare in my eyes.
"Thank you, Ryan," I whispered against his shirt. "I appreciate you taking care of us."
"Always, honey," he murmured, kissing the top of my head. "By the way, Vanessa is stopping by tomorrow around ten AM. Just a casual chat. She’s an old college friend of mine who does child development consulting. I thought it might be nice for her to observe Lily in her natural environment. No pressure at all."
An old college friend.
On the audio recording from the rabbit, Ryan had called her to coordinate the "evaluation" and discussed how Vanessa was coming to help them build their case. Now, to me, he was brushing her off as a casual college friend dropping by for coffee.
"Oh," I said, pulling back with a carefully calibrated look of mild, anxious hesitation. "A consultant? Do I need to clean the whole apartment? Is it an official visit?"
Ryan’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction at my mild anxiety. Exactly the reaction he wanted.
"No, no, nothing official," he reassured me smoothly, patting my arm. "Just be yourself, Claire. Try to relax. Take a deep breath."
"Okay," I whispered, lowering my gaze. "I'll try."
Later that night, after Ryan fell into a deep, heavy sleep, I slipped out of bed.
I walked into the living room in the dark, where Marcus and his technician had spent two hours earlier that evening installing a tiny, pinhole microphone disguised as a decorative wall vent right above the living room sofa.
I checked my phone. The remote monitoring app was green. Signal strong. Audio crisp.
I walked into Lily’s bedroom.
My daughter was sleeping peacefully, her small chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. The pink rabbit sat on her pillow, its long ears drooping over the edge. I picked it up, pressed the recording button one last time, and whispered into its plastic ear:
"Mommy loves you, sweet girl. And Mommy is going to protect you."
May you like
I set the rabbit back down, kissed her warm cheek, and walked out into the hallway.
Tomorrow, the trap would spring.
