Chapter 3 - The Secret Ally

By Wednesday morning, the emotional toll of playing a double agent in my own home began to press heavily against my ribs.

Ryan was in high spirits. He whistled while making his morning protein shake. He kissed my cheek before leaving for his office, telling me to "take a walk in the fresh air" and "not worry about dinner." He was enjoying the role of the benevolent, patient husband guiding his fragile, unstable wife toward the inevitable exit.

That afternoon, under the guise of going to the grocery store, I drove to a quiet Starbucks on the edge of town to meet Evelyn’s senior investigator, Marcus Vance—no relation to Ryan, thankfully.

Marcus was a burly man in his late forties with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a worn leather jacket and holding a black encrypted tablet. He slid into the booth across from me without ordering coffee.

"Mrs. Bennett," he greeted me quietly. "Ms. Cross briefed me. You have the files?"

I slid a small USB drive across the table. "Everything. Recordings of Ryan coaching Lily, his phone conversations with Melissa Ward, and high-resolution photos of the toy."

Marcus plugged the drive into his tablet. His fingers danced across the screen for several silent minutes as the audio files loaded. I watched his face—a hardened, professional mask that had seen the worst of human nature—gradually tighten into a grim line as Ryan’s voice echoed through his earphones.

"Son of a bitch," Marcus muttered softly, pulling out one earbud. "Coaching a four-year-old child to fabricate abandonment narratives. That’s not just parental alienation, Mrs. Bennett. That borders on psychological abuse."

"Can we prove Melissa Ward is part of this?" I asked, leaning forward.

"We already have," Marcus said, tapping the screen. "Melissa Ward isn't just a random woman. She’s a junior partner at the commercial real estate firm where Ryan works. More importantly, she’s a licensed paralegal who used to work for a family law firm in DuPage County. She knows exactly how to draft a preliminary petition for sole custody."

My stomach turned. "They're working together."

"Oh, they're more than working together," Marcus said, pulling up a digital file containing hotel receipts, text logs, and credit card statements. "They’ve been living together on the side for eight months. Ryan rented a secondary apartment downtown under a corporate LLC. That’s where he goes when he 'works late.'"

The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow.

While I was staying home, keeping our apartment clean, cooking meals, and taking care of Lily, Ryan had been building a second life—and plotting how to steal my daughter to furnish it with another woman.

"What do we do, Marcus?" I asked, my voice dropping to a fierce whisper.

"We let Thursday happen," Marcus said, a slow, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Ms. Cross has arranged for a court reporter to sit in a parked van outside your apartment tomorrow morning. We’re going to wire your living room with ambient recording equipment that syncs directly to our legal server. When Vanessa walks in to do her 'informal favor' evaluation, she’s going to put her professional reputation on the line for a man who’s about to lose everything."
