Chapter 3 - The Trojan Horse

Two days later, Chloe returned to the townhouse. She didn't walk in with her head down; she walked in with her keys held firmly, her expression neutral. Brian was in the living room, watching television, while Eleanor was in the kitchen, clattering dishes.
"You're finally back," Brian said, not even turning around. "Did you bring the money for the utility bill? The notice says we're being cut off tomorrow."
Chloe felt a surge of cold triumph. They were desperate. They were so blinded by their need for her income that they didn't even notice the change in her eyes.
"I have the money," Chloe lied, her voice steady. "But I need you to sign some paperwork for the bank first. They need an updated household ledger to approve the extension."
She had spent the last twenty-four hours creating a fabricated "debt restructuring" document. It was a masterpiece of legal-looking jargon designed to bait Brian. If he signed it, he would be providing a handwritten specimen of his signature—the same signature she had seen on the forged loan application.
"What's this?" Brian asked, finally looking at her. He scanned the document, his brow furrowing. "This looks complicated."
"It's just the standard protocol to get the loan deferred," Chloe said, putting on her best 'worried wife' act. "If you want the lights to stay on, you'll sign it."
Eleanor poked her head into the living room, her eyes narrowed. "What are you doing? Don't let her trick you into some contract, Brian."
"I'm not tricking anyone," Chloe said, turning to Eleanor. "I'm trying to save your home. Or would you rather tell the neighbors why the power company is disconnecting you?"
Eleanor went silent, her face twisted in a sneer. Brian sighed and grabbed a pen. He scrawled his signature at the bottom of the page without a second thought.
"There," he muttered. "Are you happy now?"
May you like
"Yes," Chloe said, sliding the document into her folder. "I’m very happy."
As she walked out the door, she felt the weight of the folder against her chest. She had the proof. She had Brian’s signature to compare against the forged loan application, and she had caught them in the act of trying to manipulate her one last time.
