Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Facade

By the end of the week, the suburban townhouse on Elm Street experienced a reality check that no amount of denial could fix.
Brian sat at the kitchen table, his phone buzzing violently against the wood. It was his bank, notifying him that all joint and personal accounts associated with his social security number had been flagged and frozen under a court-ordered fraud investigation. Across from him, Eleanor was frantically dialing her credit union, only to be met by an automated recording stating her accounts were locked pending a federal inquiry.
The doorbell rang. It wasn't the delivery driver or a neighbor dropping off mail.
Two uniformed officers from the Boston Police Department stood on the porch, flanked by a financial crimes investigator holding a thick manila folder.
“Mr. Brian Vance?” the lead investigator asked as Brian cautiously opened the door.
“Yes? What is this about?” Brian stammered, his face instantly draining of color.
“You are being served with a formal subpoena for questioning regarding identity theft, wire fraud, and the unauthorized procurement of financial loans under a false name,” the officer stated clearly, holding up the documents. “And an arrest warrant has been issued for Eleanor Vance for receiving stolen funds derived from identity fraud.”
Eleanor shrieked from the kitchen, dropping her ceramic coffee mug. It shattered against the tile floor, sending brown shards and dark liquid splattering across her immaculate kitchen.
“This is a mistake!” Eleanor screamed, rushing into the hallway, her face twisted in absolute panic. “Chloe! This is Chloe’s fault! She’s lying, she agreed to help us with the family finances!”
“Mrs. Vance, anything you say can and will be used against you,” the officer replied smoothly, stepping past them into the house.

Brian looked around his living room—the house he claimed to own, the life he had built on deceit—and realized that the walls were completely caving in. He reached for his phone to call Chloe, desperate, pleading, but the screen flashed with a notification from Sarah Sterling’s office: Petition for Emergency Divorce, Asset Seizure, and Restitution filed.
He was entirely alone.
