Chapter 3 - The Eviction Order

The silence in the boardroom was suffocating.

The senior board members sat frozen, looking at the wire transfer records that laid bare my brother's financial crimes and my mother’s complicity.

My mother slowly stood up, pulling herself to her full height, her hand resting heavily on the marble table. Her gray eyes burned with a mixture of furious disbelief and rising panic.

"You are out of line, Daniel," she declared, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts. "I am the matriarch of this family. I hold the voting trust established by your father. You cannot dictate terms to me in my own company."

At that exact moment, Sarah stepped into the room, carrying the dark leather folder containing the original corporate charter. Behind her walked Julian Sterling, my personal attorney, carrying a thick briefcase stuffed with certified land deeds and estate filings.

"Actually, Mrs. Vance," Julian spoke up, his voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of fear, "you no longer hold the voting trust."

Julian opened his briefcase, placing three stamped legal documents directly in front of the board members.

"Under Section 4 of the Vance Family Trust Agreement," Julian explained, pointing to a highlighted clause, "the primary beneficiary's thirty-fifth birthday triggers an absolute transfer of all voting control to Daniel Vance. That milestone occurred ninety days ago. Furthermore, Clause 12 explicitly states that any trustee who engages in unapproved capital extractions from family accounts forfeits their life interest in both the corporate voting pool and the family real estate portfolio."

My mother’s face turned from pale to an ash-gray mask. She looked down at the documents, her fingers trembling as she read the legal language she had spent years trying to circumvent.

"This... this is an outrage," she whispered, her voice losing its booming authority. "I am your mother, Daniel! I gave you life! I built this company beside your father while you were still in school!"

"And you humiliated my pregnant wife," I replied, standing up slowly, towering over the table. "You forced her onto a marble floor. You made her scrub your feet in a silver basin. You let Lucas film her tears while she carried my unborn son."

The board members looked away in utter shame. Even the most hardened executives in the room looked disgusted by the revelation of what had transpired inside the Vance estate.

"Lucas," I turned my attention to my younger brother, who was sweating profusely, loosening his tie with shaking fingers. "You are stripped of your title as Vice President of Development. Your corporate credit cards are revoked. Your company vehicle has already been towed from the garage. You have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings from your desk under security supervision, or you will be escorted out by the police for corporate embezzlement."

"Daniel! Please!" Lucas cried out, looking wildly at my mother for help. "Mom told me to do it! She said you’d never check the sub-accounts! She said Elena was too stupid to understand the statements!"

"Shut your mouth, you fool!" my mother hissed at him, her aristocratic facade completely shattering into ugly, raw desperation.

She turned back to me, trying to regain her footing, trying to summon the terrifying presence that had dominated my entire childhood.

"You think you’ve won, Daniel?" she sneered, stepping closer to me. "You think you can just cast us out? That estate belongs to the Vance legacy! The public will tear you apart when they find out you threw your own mother into the street for the sake of a common, low-class girl you brought into our bloodline!"

"The public will know whatever the bank statements reveal, Mother," I said coldly. "And as for the estate... Marcus is already at the house."

Her eyes widened in horror. "What did you do?"

"I changed the locks," I revealed, leaning in so only she could hear my next words. "Your personal belongings have been packed into four crates and shipped to a secondary apartment in Queens—the same neighborhood where Elena grew up. The neighborhood you called a 'slum' during our rehearsal dinner."

"You... you monster," she gasped, clutching her chest, staggering back a step.

"I am your son, Mother," I whispered. "You created me. You taught me that power belongs to those who show no mercy. The only mistake you made was assuming I would never use what you taught me against you."

I turned to the board members, whose expressions had shifted from confusion to absolute submission. They knew where the power lay now.

"This meeting is adjourned," I announced. "The board will reconvene tomorrow morning to approve Lucas’s formal termination and the restructuring of the legal department. Have a good day, gentlemen."

Without giving my mother or brother another second of my time, I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom. Behind me, I could hear Lucas sobbing, pleading with the security guards who stepped into the room, and my mother’s voice screeching my name into the empty corridor.

I didn't stop. I walked straight to the elevator, pulled out my phone, and dialed the penthouse.

The nurse answered. "Mr. Vance?"

"How is she?" I asked, my voice instantly softening, the ice melting away the moment I spoke her name.

"Her blood pressure has dropped significantly, sir," the nurse reported. "She woke up a few minutes ago. She ate her breakfast, and she's resting comfortably."

"Put her on the phone," I requested softly.

A second later, Elena’s sweet, familiar voice filled my ear. "Daniel?"

"It’s done, sweetheart," I told her, stepping into the private elevator as the doors closed, isolating me from the chaos of the corporate floor. "They are gone from the company. They are gone from the house. They will never touch you again."

On the other end of the line, I heard a long, shaky exhale—the sound of a woman who had been holding her breath for months finally allowing herself to fill her lungs with air.

May you like

"Thank you, Daniel," she wept quietly, but this time, they were tears of relief. "Please... come home soon."

"I’m on my way, Elena," I promised. "I'm coming home."
