Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The fallout from the live broadcast was instantaneous and catastrophic for my mother and brother.

Within an hour of the evening news airing, the video of my mother resting her foot on my pregnant wife’s shoulder went viral across every social media platform on the globe. The public outcry was immediate, fierce, and unforgiving. The "Matriarch of Manhattan" was transformed overnight into an international pariah.

By midnight, the board of directors of Vance Global Holdings held an emergency virtual conference without my mother’s involvement. They voted unanimously to sever all legal, corporate, and promotional ties with Eleanor Vance and Lucas Vance.

By sunrise, the Manhattan Supreme Court dismissed my mother’s civil suit with prejudice, the presiding judge citing clear evidence of domestic abuse, financial fraud, and perjury.

Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the storm raging outside.

I returned home late that night to find Elena waiting for me in the living room. She was sitting on the sofa, bathed in the soft glow of the city lights, watching the news coverage on her phone.

As I walked into the room, she set her phone aside and looked up at me. Tears were brimming in her eyes, but they were no longer tears of fear or pain.

"You showed them," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Daniel... the whole world saw what she did."

I knelt beside the sofa, taking her hands in mine and kissing her knuckles gently. "I told you she would pay, Elena. No one humiliates you and gets away with it. Not even my mother."

Elena leaned forward, burying her face in the crook of my neck, letting out a long, shuddering sob that seemed to release months of pent-up trauma. I held her tight, feeling her body relax completely against mine, her warm breath soothing the tension that had gripped my shoulders for days.

"Is it really over?" she asked softly against my skin.

"It’s over, sweetheart," I promised. "They have nothing left."

The following afternoon, I drove down to the old Vance estate in my sedan. Marcus was waiting at the front gates with a team of private contractors and two uniformed police officers.

The heavy wrought-iron gates, which had once felt like the entrance to a majestic castle, now looked like the bars of an abandoned prison.

As my car pulled up the long, winding driveway, I saw four large wooden moving crates sitting near the front fountain. My mother’s personal luggage—designer coats, antique jewelry, family heirlooms that belonged strictly to her lineage—had been packed and sealed under legal supervision.

My mother stood on the front steps, dressed in a plain coat, looking dramatically aged. The imperious, terrifying matriarch had shrunk into a bitter, broken woman. Beside her, Lucas sat on the edge of a crate, staring at the ground, his face pale and sunken.

When I stepped out of the car, my mother pulled herself together, trying to summon one last spark of defiance.

"You satisfied, Daniel?" she spat, her voice trembling with hatred as I approached the steps. "You’ve turned the whole world against your own blood! My name is ruined! Your brother is facing criminal charges! Is this what your father raised you to be?"

"My father raised me to protect what is mine," I replied coldly, standing two steps below her, looking down at her with complete detachment. "You ruined your own name, Mother. You did it the moment you let your greed and cruelty overcome your humanity."

Lucas looked up at me, his eyes wet with tears. "Daniel... please. Talk to the district attorney. Don't let them send me to prison. I'm your brother!"

"You were my brother," I corrected him smoothly. "Until you leaned against that banister and filmed my pregnant wife weeping on the floor. You made your choice, Lucas. Now you will face the legal consequences of your embezzlements."

My mother stepped forward, her eyes wild. "You won't get away with this! I will contest the trust! I will fight you in every court in this country!"

"With what money, Mother?" I asked softly, taking a legal folder from my coat and handing it to her.

She snatched the folder, opening it with shaking hands. Her eyes scanned the document, and the final trace of color drained from her face.

"What... what is this?" she gasped.

"That is a formal notice of asset seizure," I explained. "Because you authorized the illegal transfers from Vance Global sub-accounts, the corporate audit board has exercised its right to liquidate your personal trusts to recover the stolen capital. Your bank accounts are frozen. Your credit lines are closed. The apartment in Queens is the only property registered under your name that remains unencumbered."

She dropped the folder onto the cold marble steps, staring at me as if looking at a stranger.

"You... you left me with nothing," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the wind through the trees.

"I left you with what you gave Elena," I replied, my voice dropping into an icy finality. "Except unlike my wife... you earned it."

I turned to the police officers standing by the gates. "Escort them off the property."

Without another word, I turned my back on my mother and brother, walking back toward my car as the officers stepped forward to carry out the eviction. Behind me, my mother began to scream my name—a bitter, desperate sound that echoed off the stone walls of the mansion—but I didn't look back.

I got into the sedan, pulled out my phone, and called the high-end landscaping and interior design firm I had hired two days ago.

"This is Daniel Vance," I said into the receiver. "Begin the renovations on the estate immediately. Tear out the marble foyer. Gut the main suite. I want every trace of the past erased before my son is born."
