Chapter 4 - The Counterattack

For three days, a strange, glorious peace settled over our lives.
The penthouse on 5th Avenue became a sanctuary. The sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the nursery we were constructing in the east wing. I spent my mornings working from home, sitting beside Elena on the balcony as she sketched designs for the baby's room, her color returning, her smile blooming once again like the white roses she used to love.
Dr. Aris visited daily, confirming that her blood pressure had stabilized and that our son was growing strong. The dark marks on her wrists had begun to fade into faint yellow bruises—a lingering shadow of a nightmare that was rapidly receding.
But I knew my mother too well to believe she would go quietly into the night. A woman who had spent thirty years wielding total authority over her family and her social circle did not simply accept eviction and public disgrace.
On Thursday morning, while Elena was resting, my security chief, Marcus, stepped into my study, his expression severe.
"We have a situation, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, placing a tablet on my desk.
I tapped the screen. It was a live feed of a local news broadcast, a prominent tabloid talk show hosted by a journalist known for tearing down high-society families.
Sitting on the leather sofa in the studio was my mother, dressed in a muted black dress, her eyes glistening with artfully applied tears. Beside her sat Lucas, looking pale, wearing a worn jacket, playing the part of a victim perfectly.
"...I gave my life to that boy," my mother’s voice sobbed through the speaker, carefully modulated to project heartbreak and betrayal. "And the moment he married that girl... everything changed. She manipulated him, alienated him from his blood, and when I tried to counsel her about managing family finances, she accused me of abuse. Now my son has thrown his own mother out onto the streets, seized my inheritance, and left his younger brother destitute..."
I watched the broadcast, my face expressionless, though my blood ran cold with quiet fury.
"She’s launching a public sympathy campaign," Marcus explained. "She’s filed a civil suit in Manhattan Supreme Court claiming undue influence, financial coercion, and elder abuse. The press is already congregating outside the main corporate building."
"She thinks she can drag Elena into the dirt," I said softly, my eyes narrowing at the screen as my mother dabbed her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "She thinks that if she makes enough noise, the board will panic over brand reputation and force me into a quiet financial settlement."
"The social media response is already building, sir," Marcus warned. "They’re painting your wife as a gold-digger who broke up an established Manhattan legacy."
I closed the tablet, setting it down on the desk with a soft, decisive click.
"She wants a public spectacle, Marcus," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "She thinks I will play defense, hide behind corporate press releases, and beg her for a non-disclosure agreement."
"What are your orders, Mr. Vance?"
"Call Julian," I commanded. "Tell him to prepare a countersuit for defamation, extortion, and corporate fraud. But more importantly... call the production office of that television network. Tell them Daniel Vance will appear live on their six o'clock evening broadcast."
Marcus looked surprised. "Live, sir? You’ve never given a media interview in your career."
"Today I give one," I said, looking toward the bedroom door where my wife was sleeping peacefully. "My mother wants to use the court of public opinion to destroy my wife's dignity. It's time I show the public the receipts."
By 5:30 PM, I arrived at the television studio in Midtown. The foyer was swarming with reporters, camera crews, and paparazzi. When my vehicle pulled up, a wave of flashing light erupted through the darkened windows, but I stepped out with absolute poise, my head held high, ignoring the wild questions being shouted at me.
Behind the scenes, the show’s executive producer met me nervously, wringing his hands. "Mr. Vance, we are thrilled you’re doing this, but I must inform you that your mother and brother are still in the green room. They’ve requested a joint segment—"
"No," I cut him off smoothly. "They gave their performance this morning. I will speak alone. And you will air the video file I provided to your control room thirty minutes ago without editing a single frame."
The producer blinked, intimidated by the sheer authority in my presence. "Video file, sir? We haven't reviewed—"
"Review it now," I instructed, leaning in slightly. "Or I walk out, buy your network's parent company by midnight, and fire you before breakfast."
The producer went pale, nodding frantically before rushing toward the control booth.
At 6:00 PM, the red light on the main studio camera clicked on. The anchor, a sharp-tongued interviewer designed to grill high-profile guests, turned to me with a practiced, predatory smile.
"Good evening, viewers," the anchor began. "Today, the city was shocked by allegations made by Eleanor Vance, the matriarch of the Vance Global empire, who claims her son, CEO Daniel Vance, ousted her from the family home and firm at the behest of his new wife. Joining us live is Daniel Vance himself. Daniel... how do you respond to your mother's claim that you abandoned your family?"
I sat calmly in the leather armchair, looking directly into the camera lens, addressing millions of homes across the city.
"I didn't abandon my family," I said, my voice rich, steady, and echoing with unshakeable conviction. "I protected it."
The anchor raised an eyebrow. "Protected it? Your mother claims your wife, Elena, spent over six hundred thousand dollars of family funds and fabricated stories of emotional mistreatment."
"My mother is a liar," I stated plainly, without a single trace of hesitation or emotion.
The anchor gasped slightly at my bluntness. "That is a severe charge, Daniel—"
"I don't make charges without evidence," I interrupted, reaching into my jacket and pulling out a silver flash drive, holding it up for the camera. "In my hands, I hold six months of forensic accounting records showing that the six hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars in question was stolen by my brother, Lucas Vance, to pay off illegal gambling debts in Macao, authorized secretly by my mother to cover his crimes."
The anchor’s eyes widened as the control room received the signal. "We... we have some footage that your team provided us just moments ago. Can we play that?"
"Please do," I said softly.
The main screen behind the anchor switched to a crystal-clear video feed.
It was the security footage from the main foyer of my estate, captured by the hidden corporate surveillance system I had installed two years ago.
The entire city watched in horrified silence as the video played on live television.
There was my eight-month-pregnant wife, kneeling on the cold marble floor in a damp dress, tears streaming down her face. There was my mother, standing over her, resting her bare foot on Elena’s trembling shoulder, her voice picked up clearly by the high-definition microphone: “Scrub harder. This house belongs to my children, not you.”
And there was Lucas, leaning against the banister, laughing and filming the humiliation on his phone.
The video played for thirty excruciating seconds before cutting back to the studio.
The anchor was completely speechless, her jaw slightly open, staring at me in absolute shock. The studio crew behind the cameras stood frozen, dead silence reigning over the room.
"That video was recorded four days ago," I said, my voice low, deadly, and piercing through every living room in Manhattan. "My mother did not seek reconciliation. She sought to destroy my wife's humanity. She abused a pregnant woman carrying her own grandchild, stole from my household, and tried to frame Elena for her own son's corruption."
I looked straight into the camera lens, speaking directly to my mother, who I knew was watching from the green room down the hall.

"My family is my wife and my unborn son," I concluded softly. "To anyone who attempts to harm them, ruin them, or humiliate them... know this: I will spare no expense, leave no legal stone unturned, and use every fraction of my power to break you. The Vance empire belongs to me. And it will protect Elena to my final breath."
I stood up, unclipped my lapel microphone, tossed it onto the desk, and walked off the live set, leaving the anchor staring into an empty chair as the show cut abruptly to a commercial break.
