Chapter 7 - The Hidden Cloud Evidence

Three days later, Jessica and Olivia were finally discharged from the hospital. Their physical burns were healing under heavy protective cream, but the emotional trauma remained profound. Every time a door slammed or a loud noise echoed in our apartment building, Olivia would flinch and jump into my lap.

I knew we couldn't stay in that apartment. The air felt heavy with bad memories. I immediately paid the lease termination fee and moved us into a secure, furnished rental residence on the opposite side of Phoenix while we looked for a permanent home.

Meanwhile, Carmen’s high-priced defense attorney, a ruthless legal veteran named Richard Sterling hired by my mother’s estate, filed a motion for bail and attempted to dismiss the charges.

“Your Honor,” Sterling argued during the preliminary court hearing, which I attended via video link. “My client is an elderly woman with severe health issues. The claims made by her daughter-in-law are the product of pre-existing psychological instability. Mrs. Carmen Ferris was merely attempting to manage a chaotic home environment.”

The defense was trying to frame Jessica as a liar.

That afternoon, while packing up our old apartment, I remembered something crucial. Three years ago, when Olivia was a baby, I had installed an invisible smart-home security camera inside the smoke detector in the living room and kitchen area. I had forgotten about it when the subscription lapsed two years ago.

I immediately logged into the cloud server software on my laptop, reactivated my old account, and requested an archive restoration for the past 90 days.

At 2:00 AM, the file download completed.

I opened the video files. My hands shook as I played the footage recorded over the past three months.

The cameras had captured everything in crystal-clear 4K definition:

Video 1 (August 14): Carmen standing over the kitchen counter, crushing white pills with a spoon and dumping them into Jessica’s morning tea while laughing quietly to herself.

Video 2 (September 2): Carmen slapping Jessica across the face when Jessica tried to reach for her phone on the dining table.

Video 3 (October 10 - The day I returned): Carmen grabbing five-year-old Olivia by her arm, dragging her to the sink, turning the hot water knob all the way to maximum, and shouting, “You scrub those pots until they shine, or I’ll lock you in the dark closet until your father gets back next week!”

Tears of absolute fury burned my eyes. The defense was claiming lack of evidence—and I had just unlocked the ultimate undeniable proof.
