Chapter 9 - Justice Rendered

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When they filed back into the jury box, there was no doubt left in the room. The verdict was unanimous on all counts.
Judge Sarah Jenkins looked down at Carmen, who was now trembling—not from age, but from the terrifying realization that her absolute control over our lives was forever broken.
“Carmen Ferris,” Judge Jenkins declared, her voice cold and unyielding. “In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a horrific, calculated campaign of cruelty, poison, and child abuse executed against one’s own family. You exploited your son’s trust, tortured your daughter-in-law chemically and physically, and inflicted barbaric pain upon a helpless five-year-old child.”
Judge Jenkins leaned forward over her bench.
“On the count of Felony Chemical Endangerment of an Adult: 10 years.” “On the count of Aggravated Child Abuse: 10 years.” “On the counts of Grand Larceny and Identity Theft: 5 years.” “Sentences to be served consecutively. Total sentence: 25 years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.”
Carmen let out a shrill, pathetic wail as the bailiffs pulled her to her feet, double-locking heavy iron chains around her waist and wrists. She looked toward me one last time, weeping, begging for mercy.
