Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Collapse

The grand jury trial took place at the Maricopa County Superior Courthouse.
The courtroom was packed with media, local news cameras, and curious observers. Carmen sat at the defense table dressed in a soft beige cardigan, wearing reading glasses, trying her absolute best to look like a frail, fragile grandmother who was being unfairly prosecuted by an ungrateful son.
Her attorney, Richard Sterling, stood up before the judge and jury.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” Sterling proclaimed dramatically. “What you have here is a sad case of family miscommunication. My client, a devoted grandmother, was invited into this home to assist. There is no physical proof that she maliciously administered medication—”
“The prosecution calls its next piece of evidence,” Prosecutor Michael Vance interrupted cleanly, stepping up to the judge’s bench. “We submit into evidence Exhibit D: Verified 4K Cloud Security Video with synchronized audio, recovered directly from the primary residence.”
Sterling’s face went completely pale. Carmen turned her head sharply, her meek, frail demeanor fracturing in an instant.
The lights in the courtroom dimmed. A massive projection screen descended behind the witness stand.
The video played.
The sound of hot water roaring from the tap filled the quiet courtroom, followed by five-year-old Olivia’s terrified screams on the recording: “Grandma, it hurts! It’s too hot!”
And then Carmen’s cold, chilling voice echoed off the courtroom walls: “Shut up, you little brat! If you don't finish, you don't eat! Your mother is useless, and you’re going to learn how to obey me!”
The jury gasped in utter horror. Two jurors covered their mouths in disbelief.
Carmen leaped up from her chair at the defense table, completely dropping her act of frailty. Her face turned purple with manic rage, her fingers curling into claws as she pointed directly at me sitting on the prosecution bench.
“You filthy, ungrateful traitor!” Carmen screamed at the top of her lungs, fighting off the court bailiffs who rushed to restrain her. “I raised you! I made you who you are! That worthless little girl wasn't good enough for you! I had to clean up your life! I had to teach them who runs that house!”

“Order in the court! Order in the court!” Judge Sarah Jenkins slammed her gavel down repeatedly. “Restrain the defendant immediately!”
It took three heavy bailiffs to pin Carmen down onto her chair. The jury watched the entire hysterical breakdown, seeing the true, unvarnished monster underneath the innocent elderly facade.
