Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Syndicate

However, a wounded animal is most dangerous when backed into a corner. Ryan was not working entirely alone. Vance Capital Management was tied to a larger network of shady offshore investors and powerful figures who could not afford to let Ryan talk to federal prosecutors.

On the third day after Ryan’s arrest, I received a visit at my home from a senior partner at the city’s most notorious corporate law firm—a man named Victor Thorne.

Thorne sat in my living room, sipping tea, his expression cold and calculating.

“Mr. Miller,” Thorne began, placing a leather briefcase on the coffee table. “We recognize that Ryan Vance acted recklessly regarding your daughter. However, the destruction of Vance Capital affects several high-net-worth individuals who have no interest in being dragged through public scandal.”

“Is that a threat, Mr. Thorne?” I asked mildly.

“It’s a business proposition,” Thorne replied, sliding the briefcase toward me. “Inside is two million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds. In exchange, you will drop your assistance to the U.S. Attorney’s office, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and allow Ryan to settle the civil matters privately.”

I looked down at the briefcase, then back up into Thorne’s cold eyes.

“You brought a bribe into the home of a former Chief Fraud Investigator,” I said slowly. “Do you know what that tells me, Victor?”

Thorne’s eyes narrowed. “It tells you we are generous.”

“No,” I replied, standing up. “It tells me that Ryan’s firm was laundering money for you and your political associates. And it tells me that you are terrified.”

Before Thorne could respond, I pointed to the small hidden camera mounted near the mantle. “That audio and video feed is currently streaming directly to the FBI task force. I suggest you take your briefcase and leave before the state troopers arrive at my driveway.”

Thorne’s face turned white. He snatched the briefcase and bolted out the front door without another word.
