The story broke across national news networks the following morning.
The headline on every financial channel read: "HEDGE FUND MOGUL RYAN VANCE INDICTED FOR MASSIVE FRAUD, FORGERY, AND WITNESS INTIMIDATION."
Reporters stood outside the federal courthouse detailing how Vance had stolen millions from investors, forged legal documents to strip his wife of her home, and attempted to use illegal leverage to avoid prosecution.
Emily sat on the sofa beside me, holding a warm cup of tea, watching the broadcast. For the first time in months, the color had returned to her cheeks, and the fear in her eyes was replaced by a sense of quiet, blossoming strength.
“I was so afraid of him, Dad,” she whispered softly, her eyes fixed on the screen as images of Ryan being led into the courthouse appeared. “He made me feel so small… so utterly powerless.”
“Narcissists survive on terror, Emily,” I told her, placing a comforting arm around her shoulder. “They make you believe they own the world, but behind the luxury and the threats, they are hollow. All it takes is light to make them disappear.”
