Chapter 9 - The Trials of Renewal

Six months later, spring bloomed across Chicago. Green grass restored the estate's lawns, and vibrant tulips lined the stone pathways leading down to Lake Michigan.

Our life had transformed completely. The criminal trials against Dr. Thorne and Victoria Voss had concluded with heavy prison sentences, ensuring that neither could ever interfere with our lives again. The public narrative had shifted from a dark scandal to a story of resilience and miraculous reunion.

I had used a portion of the family trust to establish the Hayes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to auditing municipal maternity wards, protecting vulnerable young mothers, and preventing medical fraud in low-income hospitals. For the first time, my past pain was actively serving to shield other women from experiencing the nightmare I had endured.

One sunny afternoon, Roman and I took the triplets to the public park near Navy Pier.

Leo, Liam, and Maya—now energetic, talking toddlers—were running across the grass, chasing bubbles blown by a nearby street performer. They laughed hysterically, their hazel eyes sparkling in the afternoon sunlight.

Roman stood behind me, his arms wrapped securely around my waist, his chin resting gently on my shoulder as we watched them play.

"They're getting so fast," I laughed softly, leaning back against his strong chest. "Leo almost outran Marcus this morning."

"Marcus is getting old," Roman teased softly, his voice rich with contentment. "Or maybe our sons are just born troublemakers."

"They get that from their father," I retorted, turning my head to smile at him.

Roman chuckled, kissing the corner of my cheek. Then, his arms loosened slightly, and he took a step back.

I turned around, surprised by the sudden movement, only to find Roman dropping down onto one knee on the soft green grass.

My hand flew to my mouth.

From his jacket pocket, Roman pulled out a velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond surrounded by three smaller, brilliant blue sapphires.

"Pamela Hayes," Roman said, his dark eyes brimming with emotion, stripped of all corporate armor, showing only the soul of a man completely devoted to the woman before him. "Fourteen months ago, a terrible tragedy almost erased your future. But fate brought you back to me, and to our children. You completed our family, and you captured my heart. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Tears of absolute happiness spilled over my eyelashes. I didn't need a single second to think.

May you like

"Yes!" I cried out, dropping to my knees beside him on the grass. "Yes, Roman! A thousand times yes!"

He slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace as the park erupted into soft applause from passersby. The children came tumbling over, giggling and piling on top of us in a chaotic, glorious group hug.
