Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

Liam dropped his flashlight, throwing himself onto his knees beside her. His hands shook violently as he tore at the thick nylon ropes binding her to the chair.

"Nora, oh my god, Nora," he sobbed, burying his face in her cold neck. "I’m here. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry."

"Liam, you have to go," she whispered, her teeth chattering. "She... she knew you would come. She wanted you to find me here."

Before Liam could process her words, the heavy wooden door of the archive room slammed shut. The sharp click of a deadbolt locking from the outside echoed through the small space.

The overhead fluorescent light flickered on, blinding them.

Through a small, reinforced glass window in the door, Gwen’s face appeared. She wasn't crying. She wasn't angry. She looked entirely calm, a cold, serene smile gracing her lips as she held up a heavy ring of keys.

"I always knew you were smarter than you let on, Liam," Gwen said, her voice amplified by a small intercom system beside the door. "But you’ve always been too soft. Just like Dad. Just like Mom."

"Gwen!" Liam screamed, throwing his weight against the heavy door. "Unlock this door! What are you doing?!"

"I’m saving this family, Liam," Gwen said, her voice chillingly maternal. "Do you have any idea how much debt this facility is in? Do you have any idea what would happen if the state auditors found out I’ve been using the residents' trust funds to pay our operational costs? Nora found out. She was volunteering in the billing office, trying to find a way to lower her mother's payments, and she found the ledger."

Nora leaned her head against Liam’s shoulder, her voice weak. "She’s been stealing from the elderly for years, Liam. She was going to frame me for it. That's why she wanted the $8,000 transfers in my name. It made it look like I was embezzling."

"It was a perfect plan," Gwen sighed, looking at her nails. "The police already think Nora ran away because she was guilty of stealing your money. And now... the two of you are going to have a tragic accident in this old cellar. A carbon monoxide leak from the boiler. It’s a very old system, after all. The town will grieve for the tragic couple who died trying to hide from the shame."

"Gwen, please!" Liam cried, his hands clawing at the glass. "I’m your brother!"

"And I loved you, Liam," Gwen whispered, her eyes turning cold and dead. "But I love my freedom more."

She turned and walked away, the sound of her heavy boots fading into the quiet darkness of the cellar.
